M1917 Sporter - Can you tell me anything ? - She's Special - Pictures

The pinkish coloured action is suggestive of an Eddystone action, the hardest and least desirable action of the three makers, Winchester and Remington being the other two... Or just a lousy bluing job... If it is an Eddystone I believe it is best left as a 30-06. It could also be the original barrel with a front sight added. With no rear sight and that front ramp sight I suspect it may have had a receiver peep sight at one time... Does it appear to have any inletting or holes drilled for a receiver sight on the right side just ahead of the closed bolt handle?

I took it apart and took a look, it has holes drilled where you say, they are filled in with small screws. The only real markings I could find is the winged o and a W on the bolt handle, a bunch of stuff I cant read on the action, and a V and V5 on the barrel. After looking at this http://www.odcmp.org/503/rifle.pdf

Im thinking winchester. Ill take a closer look now that I have that document.
