M1917 Sporter Misfire

I was spending some time with my 1917 sporter last night, running some snap caps through it, and getting to know it. I noticed that if you run the bolt while the safety is on, and then release the safety, the firing pin releases. This is why I like to get to know my rifles before I take them out.

This rifle has some funny issues where the bolt is concerned.

Is this normal ?

That's not normal.
I agree with getting it checked out.
Bubba may have fiddled with it.

Good for you for doing a pre range check with snap caps.
I like to do the same with rifles that are new to me.
 
Any firearm, like your M17, that acts strangely, should be examined carefully by a competent 'smith.

Many years ago, I bought a practically brand new M70 pushfeed Winchester in 300 Win mag.
I bought it for a real bargain, since the owner said it was unsafe.
It was. A minor bump when it was cocked would release the sear.

I found out by inquiry that the rifle had been fiddled with by some wanna-be gunsmith.
He had altered the angle of the trigger/sear relationship to the point that it was not inclined to hold.

I did some searching in my parts bin, and found the necessary parts from a parts assortment I had purchased previously.
Fixed it right up....just did a light stoning to smooth the mating parts, and adjusted the trigger properly.
3#, and crisp. No amount of bumping could set it off.

Be safe. No rifle should fire when the safety is released.

I don't believe you are supposed to be able to run the bolt with the safety on. I could be mistaken, but I think when the safety is on, the bolt is supposed to be locked closed. Look to see if a little pin protrudes out to lock the bolt handle (right in front of the safety).
 
I had one that you could run the bolt with the safety on, but then it would #### back further than normal - the cocking piece resting on something further back then the sear. Pull the trigger and the rifle would go safe. I sold it to a gunsmith - safest bet.
