M1A Help, rear sight elevation knob hood plastic?

I just got a M1A used off a guy who said it was 7 months old, so it is a new one. The graduated dial with the numbers on it for the elevation knob is cracked. It looks and sounds like plastic. Has a brownish look to it. It does not look like they sell them separately from the whole elevation knob. Did they switch to plastic recently to save money or am I screwed in the head?
 
I have never heard of a plastic one before.You can order a replacement from Brownells
I assume your rifle is a Chinese copy of the M-14 ?? The Chinese sights most of the time are junk.
So get a complete rear sight off a M1 Garand .....there is a guy in Italy who was selling some Italian complete sights .The contact info is on here....

No, a springfield M1A. I think it is a plastic piece that goes over top of the metal knob which ccontains the numbers for yards.

A picture would be nice, because I'm confused also. Now if it's a plastic rear sight guard (aftermarket), they can be had in the US. More details please... is it white or emerald green ? Is it boxy in shape and covers ALL of the rear sights?

Here is the picture of the rear sight, although over exposed, you can see the crack 2 notches up from the 4 marked notch.

If it has graduations on it, he must mean the elevation drum itself is cracked. Sounds like plastic because it's made of offshore potmetal (?)

I'm no expert, but I don't think that part should be plastic - it's likely just what 45ACPKING said; cheap pot metal. I'd take a couple more pictures from different angles and send them to Springfield and ask for a replacement before shelling out of pocket, worst they can do is say no and you're no worse off.

I think I will ask the seller to call since he has the warranty on it, not me! Too bad it is not transferable.
 
Way less hassle just buying a replacement. I'd take garand or real M14 sights over factory springfield sights any day of the week. The quality is not even comparable
 
Springfield has a lifetime warranty on thier rifles. They will send you a new knob free of charge .
I agree they are cast junk metal made in Taiwan by Wayne machine,but they will send you another one free of charge.
They are very good in that regard.
