M1A Legal/Technical Question

So i have recently obtained my permits and i have decided i want my first weapon to be an M1A. However i have a question i think i need to answer first. A friend of mine in the states has offered to sell me his. So i am wondering if there is a difference between an M1 you buy in the states where you can slap 20 round mags on your weapon and one you can buy here in canada where the limit is 5, and if there is a difference does that mean i can't buy my friends M1 and bring it back here with me? Thanks in advance for any help that's passed on

There is no difference in the rifle. Possessing an M1A magazine with more than 5 rounds capacity is illegal in Canada.
It is almost impossible for you as a private citizen to obtain the necessary export permits from the US, and import permits in Canada. This means that it is impractical for you to buy it, and bring it into Canada.
The laws on bringing a rifle across the border have some harsh penalties. It would be very unwise for you to buy it, and try to bring it into Canada without proper paperwork.

Thanks for the info APG I appreciate it. It sounds like I'd be a lot better off turning down his offer. So I'll just get one through normal local means.
 
Depends on the price. Might or might not make sense. There are exporters in the US who will do the paperwork for a fee.
 
You AND the seller must fill this DSP-83 form first for the Department of State and then wait...

The answer is CALL QUESTAR.... they handle third party deals as you are describing and may be able to assist you.... but there is a fee. Questar is probably your only real option here and they handle ALL the paperwork.
