Ive been loading for my M1A for a while with good sucess but would like a different load to try. Im using IMR 4064, 41.5 grains, 168gr SMK's or 168gr hornady match and what ever brass I have on hand. I also use C.C.I. L.R. primers.
I would like to try IMR 4891 to see if there is any improvement. I hear it cycles the action more reliably - correct me if Im wrong. Any info is appreciated. Im not a rookie to this and very cautious while reloading.

Thanks, James

"...IMR 4891..." IMR4895 perhaps? IMR4064 gives more consistent accuracy than IMR4895.
"...41.5..." 41.5 of 4064 is the starting load for a 168 grain bullet. Did you work up the load or just pick one?

These are loads I used through my Hungry Built Match M14.........

USE WITH CAUTION!!!!!!

Douglas Heavy 1 in 10" twist barrel
Headspaced at 1.628"

- 41.4 grs IMR 4064
Winchester cases - F.L. Sized
Federal 210M Primer
168 gr Sierra MatchKing Bullet
Seat: 2.800"

This was 1/2 MOA ( or less) load out to 300 meters.............very consisent..........several times I put a round through a .38 Spl. case from a cold bore at 200 yards.............

Next load was:

- 45.0 grs H-BLC2 (MAX LOAD)
Federal Match Case. F.L. Sized
Fed. 210M Primer
168 gr Sierra MatchKing
Seat: 2.800"

This load performed just as well as the 4064 load, but with ball powder I could use my powder measures, and had a really good supply of H-BLC2 at the time.

Also try WW-748 and Reloader 15 (the U.S. Military uses this powder for it's match ammunition).

My Recipe

I have some really wild success with 45.3 gr Win 748 powder, CCI 250 Primer, Sierra 150 gr Spitzer. The Hornady 150 gr bullet so far, 45.5 of 748 (CCI 250 primer) seems to be fairly consistent, but groups still not as tight as Sierra bullet.

I did not care for the 4064 powder. Groups were too erratic.

To test the rifle, I am using modified iron sights with a benchrest.

No I did not just pick a load. I ran a batch of different loads out of the hornady manual through my rifle and found these were the most consistant and yes I ment 4895. that was a typo on my end.

Thanks for the info gents. I will try some of these different powders out. I do agree that 4064 is time consuming to throw. I do use this for my 30-06 as well as 4831 which is pretty nasty too.
