M1A or M14 – Tomaeto Tomoto

What is the deal with these guys who just can’t resist the temptation to correct every single CGN post where a guy calls his rifle an M14 when it’s really an M1A or M305, M21, M25, M39 or whatever other designation? There is at least 12 other names for variants of the M14 depending on the configuration and manufacturer so why the insistence on the correction to the M1A?

If it was not made by Springfield it’s not and M1A and even if it was and someone called it an M14, we get it don’t we?

I mean seriously dudes… Is there anyone here who does not get it by now?

Ya ya ya we all know the “real” M14 is full auto… so what, we don’t have one!!
When we nonmilitary CGNers say M14 it’s pretty safe to assume it’s not full auto so why the irresistible urge to correct every single person on the point?

Show of hands…
When you read M14 in a CGN post and automatically assume it is full auto … raise your hand.
If your hand is up right now, you need to seek professional help.
We can start right here for those of you with your hands still up. M14 roughly translates to M14ish, meaning it looks like an M14 with the naked eye from 200 yards away and 95 percent of the parts are interchaneable. Let’s just call it gun slang. A grammatical correction is not required.
Can you please try to remember that?

The first thing that comes to mind when I see threads like this is that I never see anyone call the AR-15 by the name M16 or M4, but a lot of M1A, M305, M14 interchangability. I wonder why that is? But who cares really. This is CGN. Not CFLRS.

I have an M-14...ish

But the manual has Springfield M1A written on the cover. I only call it an M14 when talking to girls.;)

If it wasn't for legal / political reasons I think they would all have m14 stamped on them in my eye's the m14 was never a success in full auto so the only real difference is who made it what it's made out of and how much it cost we are just lucky there is one that fits any budget here in the mighty north !

They go by many name here on CGN but they are M1A's, not a M14. M14 are by definition have a select fire which makes them a converted auto (full auto/semi auto).

Well there's constantly new members joining, lots of them new to firearms and shooting, and using a lot of the wrong terminology. I would say that it is the job of those that know the correct terms to correct the misinformed or whatever the reason. Some people say clip when it is in fact a magazine, that way everyone reading these forums will know that there is a bunch of semi intelligent members here.

The only 'M1A' is that made by Springfield Armory Inc. including the early DEVINE M1A.

No other M14 style rifles are correctly identified as M1As.

When I played with these rifles I would, generally, use the term 'M14' and when I wrote a review of them comparing Norcs to SA I think I used the term 'M14 type'. Really, we all know what we are talking about.

I say M-14. If I say I have an M305, nobody knows what I'm talking about. If I say M1A, people think I own a tank. If I say M-14 they understand exactly what I'm talking about. Then they think I'm full of #### because 'those are illegal!'...*sigh*...I need more friends who are actually interested in this stuff.

Personally I would keep on saying M1A if that was the case.
