M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

Went out today and gave it a try. Hope it will be acceptant for iron sight challenge.

Date: March 24, 2014
Temp: -6c light wind
Range: SGC
Rifle: SAI M1A Loaded
Ammo: Hornady Match 168gr BTHP Commercial Ammo

* Here is the group with Norinco Copper wash ammo.
Same condition as above. Didn't measure the group.

It is good budget ammo for plinking.

Cheese :p

Lycan - Nice rifle and nice group, especially with iron sights and commercial ammo. Do that 4 more times on the same piece of paper and you're in.

In fact I will post 2 MOA as the challenge for iron sights. I'm beginning to wonder if the challenges are too hard for the M1A platform. I was confident I'd have had this licked on my first try, unfortunately not so. Will try again this weekend if the gods of chores and spousal relations permit.

See some of the prior posts to see what is needed for a submission and let's show what these rifles can do.

That is great shooting Lycan, well done indeed. Factory ammo and iron sights.WOW.
But as Pr589 says, the format is 5 groups of five on the same piece of paper.
Given your results so far I think you will be setting the pace for iron sights, and embarrassing a few of us with scoped rigs :)
I got out yesterday, but the range is 40 km from my place and the weather was atrocious when I got there, 40 km gusts and -25 wind chill.
After five rounds I could'nt see the target for tears and frozen eyelids. So I wimped out and will try again next week.
On the bright side tho, it gives me another week to make up some more loads :))
And yeah........................you have a beautiful rifle.
Keep trying, sometimes the journey is more fun than the destination :)

Thanks Pr589 for letting me join the game. This is my first time to participate the challenge and I will follow the rule to submission. Sorry for I didn't read prior posts carefully.
I have some question and could you guide me through?

How can I put 4 target on the same paper? The reason why I am asking because I have to put minimum 12" target for 100 yard to see. Otherwise, the front pole will cover up the whole target.
Can I put four 12" target on the same stands? Also, who can sign off the target for me if I shoot alone? I normally do my shooting on weekdays morning.

Thanks Pr589 again and I will do another 4 more target ASAP.

Thanks Lost...again!
Yesterday was cold for me because I didn't wear enough clothes with me. With windchill was like -11. I was shaking like rattle snake and my hands were frozen.
I am so happy that Pr589 put up this challenge for everyone to participate across the country. It is a good chance for us to proof ourselves.

Love the 2MOA iron challenge since I don't have scope at the monument.

:p

Grab your self a big ass cardboard box, something like a fridge box etc.
I use them all the time when setting up a new scope. Just put five aiming points on it and your good to go.
I too shoot alone, and will submit my entries unwitnessed.
Its an honor thing I guess and I derive no enjoyment from self deception and neither do you I suspect.
There will always be non believers, but the greatest reward will be knowing what you have achieved yourself.
Tight groups and start looking for cardboard boxes.

Well said.
To proof ourselves but no one.
I am already excited. Let's make it happen.

This doesn't quite make the grade (1.526MOA), but my best group yet with my tweaked Norinco 305B with iron sights. Surplus Federal XM 80C ammo - 5 shots 100 yards. This is the first time I tried Federal XM80C, and it looks promising.

I doubt I could ever shoot 5 targets in a row with irons at this precision, usually my best groups have 4 out of the 5 shots in the 2 minute range with one flyer. Still, I am pretty pleased with what my cheap Norinco can do.

Great shooting Raindog, in fact bloody amazing with irons !
I wouldn't give up on the five groups of five, somebody has to set the standard and it looks like you could set a pretty high one.
What sort of tweaks on your gun ? Anything more than the usual ?

Thanks for posting
Derek

I hope to get my 2013 Marstar Norc out to the range tomorrow and get it sighted in. The only thing I have left to do is Bed the fiberglass USGI stock, and unitize the gas system. other than that I would consider it done. It was decent shooter when I put 20 rounds through it last fall before starting to tweak it! Here's hoping it will compete :)

I will head up to the range sometime next week doing my my five shot five target groups.
Raindog, It is very impressive shooting. You beat me by 0.001".

Cheese :p

Really not much other than the ordinary. I have had the privilege to attend a number of M14 clinics, several by M14Doctor - A.K.A. 45ACPKING, and applied what I learned. Stock Chinese gas cylinder unitized at one of the clinics. Thanks to Thomas and Tony!

The flash hider was a bit wonky on the rifle so I replaced it with a mil spec one and added a NM front sight, I managed to strip the rear sight while dismantling it the second time (should have left it alone as it was working OK) and had to replace it with an Italian rear sight. Replaced the op rod spring guide (Badger Ordinance) and spring(Wolff). Barrel is still somewhat out of index, but the sights are aligning up pretty close to center - no point fooling with it. Headspace was 1.638" last time I checked.

I plunked it into an old USGI wood stock for looks, haven't got around to bedding it yet. I think it actually shot the same or better in the original Chinese plastic stock once I had set the stock ferrule back to match specs. I just prefer the "classic" appearance.

For a lousy .001", I think we can call it a draw!:)

Great shooting!
I use the handicap NM barrel SA Loaded and I wasn't use my Norinco. I don't think I will shoot as good as you if I use my M305 shorty. You beat me by skill. :)
My m305 shorty just got tuned by Barney's clinic yesterday and will try it next week.

Cheese,

The weather was beautiful today at noon in Toronto. Sleek out from office around lunch break to the range. Give it a quick try and head back.
Sorry that I don't have the 5 five shot group yet but here is 2 five shot group I did today.

Range: SGC
Temp: 18C

PS. I want to thanks Barney he give me a hint to shoot iron sight.

Snow is quickly melting here, range is going to be usable very soon. I'm afraid to see how my norc & poly stack up against these loaded SA's!

I know how you feel. Lycan is all over it with IRON'S for f*&k's sake ! LOL
I do have a nice load that grouped at .896 last Friday, but I only had 5 rds made up to see what it would do :(
39.4 gr Varget, 168 match thingys 2.800 coal, Fed primers ( seated good and deep). Looks good so will make up a whole bunch.
Sick of snow shoeing down to the targets.
