M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

Ok, I just got back from work overseas. I'll load up some rounds and hopefully hit the range this weekend or early next week. I'm going to try this challenge from 100 out to 500, scoped and with irons. I no longer have access to the 900m range at Homestead which sucks because I'd sure like to continue the testing I started at 600 to 900m and try to meet this challenge at those distances.

I once made a joke on a precision forum that if I used wind flags I would have one less excuse why I had crappy groups. Rightly so they were not amused with this cavalier attitude towards the sport.... For some reason until I read the posts in this thread I didn't think of using the flags with the M14. As Pr589 said.. " we can use all the help we can get" Surprising how the wind can change things even at 100 yrds.
I was able to beat the 1/2 inch challenge in the prescision rifle forum here after setting up the flags so either they work or I was just lucky that day?
Rodney

Wind flags are at least an essential part of proper load development IMO. A shot without wind flags when developing a load is a wasted shot because you have no feed back. Did that last shot go out of the group because your load is not quite right or was there a subtle reverse in the wind condition? What you feel on your cheek at the bench is very likely not what is happening say at 75 yards for example. Yes, it's amazing to see how much a bullet will move at 100 yards with even a very slight change in wind condition. You can never know how much until you shoot over flags regularly.

I plan to put flags out for this challenge but if the collective feels otherwise, then I won't. I have a proven load so I'm happy to shoot without flags and use other indicators of condition. I'm easy either way. How does everyone feel about that?

Been sick the last few weeks but have some reloads burning a hole in my ammo can and its supposed to be sunny and 17 degrees C this Saturday:cool:. Can't wait to get back at this...trigger finger itching.

You guys with the nice rifles are making me a little envious, especially if you can outshoot my Norc with ease.

Lycan - Nice shooting with irons. Looks like you can do the 2-MOA-with-irons with ease but I see the challenge of getting it on a single piece of paper. Suggestions welcome.

Hend - Flags are good. No one has made the challenge as yet so every little bit helps, especially the guys who want to try this at ranges greater than 100 yards.

Ok sounds good Pr589.

I just bought some targets yesterday while I was in Calgary that will be perfect for this challenge at longer ranges or with irons out to 300 I'm hoping . I will staple the target to a piece of plywood and then secure that plywood to the target backer. I just need to super-modify them so it will be easier to hold consistently with irons.

I can shoot 1moa all day!.......on the Internet....:p

Well that's always going to be a problem.
Even if a guy had 10 witnesses and got it on film, there are going to be those who refuse to believe, especially if it was a " POS Norc ".
My money says it will be done by a lot of guys, and at least a couple of Norcs will be up there too

And at the end of the day....it's for fun, nothing serious. :)

Hope you get well soon.
As to put 5 target on the same paper. It would be little challenge for me since I only can staple 4 12"target at a time in the stand. I can put the 5 same target on one bigger board but I got warning from other senior member at the range. All the target has to be stapled within the stand.

Lost...again - I am sorry that if I had being annoying with anyone that I am all over the place with this MOA challenge or LOADED stuff. I just want to give it shot and have fun with full mud on my leather shoes and back to office after. :p

Cheese,

PS. I love Norinco and I can use Norc's at this challenge next time. It shoot just as good as SAI.

Nice Day At the Range

So the day turned out as expected - 14 degrees, sunny, calm....ideal day to try the challenge. Warmed up with my son's .223 bolt and tried the .5 MOA precision rifle challenge...didn't make it but may have gotten the 0.75 MOA licked:dancingbanana:.

Then I break out the M305 with the BF tension reduced to help with the stringing that has been bothering me lately. 10 rounds of Norc to re-zero the scope and what do you know...the Norc shoots pretty nice. Now I load up some more hand loads and shoot a few promising groups but by target 3 I always seem to be getting one round opening the group to 2 or 2.5 MOA...crap! Also still getting stringing just not as bad.

Out with the wrench and BF tension reduced by 60 degrees more (~1/6th of a turn). Rifle shoots better...more consistent...promising as long as I keep the rate of fire low and let the barrel cool. I shoot two more attempts (5 targets each) with the second being close to passing the challenge. I think I can get this next time but I better start looking for more bullets:rolleyes:.

Had fun and brass is tumbling as I write.

Groups: 1.26", 1.97", 1.41", 1.57" and 1.41"

Damn.............Nice try Pr, but no coconut this time.
Im in the same boat as you............waiting for some more 168's :)

There does seem to be a temperature range within which consistency can be had, sort of not too hot and not too cold, just have to work out a sustainable rate of fire.
OR....you could just cast the chicken bones and leave it to the God's :)

Nice try tho.

I have to admit, I'm havin a hard time with this, or any sustained bench shooting time.
Since almost cutting off my trigger finger at the second knuckle last july.
I can squeeze a 4.5# trigger maybe 5 or 6 times with control but after that.... Those severed tendons are still not workin right after surgery 2 after wrecking it squeezing the trigger on my moose this year.
I'll get there hehehe
Enjoying seeing everyone out there shootin and posting results :D

Thomas - Sorry to hear that you injured yourself. Is this a warning to those of us thinking of going into semi-retirement:p? I Understand that use is the best physiotherapy - as long as you don't overstress it - well you have to watch the barrel temperature anyway.

Hope it mends well. Getting older sure slows down the healing process...sucks don't it?

Lost - chicken bones....hmmm..digging in the garbage..well sometimes figuring these rifles out does seem like voodoo and black magic.

How can I put 4 target on the same paper? The reason why I am asking because I have to put minimum 12" target for 100 yard to see. Otherwise, the front pole will cover up the whole target.

Cheese :p

Go to the dollar store and get a roll of plain brown wrapping paper. $1.00 usually gets you a roll 36" wide x 36' long or something like that.

Cut a 12" aiming bull out of a heavy piece of black cardboard.

Go to the range and staple a broad swath of wrapping paper to the board. Then pin (don't staple!) the bull to one corner. Shoot a group of five, take off the bull and move it over or down .5m or so, mark the location of the first group. Repeat, repeat. At the end of the day, throw away the bull, and show the world the plain paper with 20 holes in it.

Great idea!

Can't see this being objectionable to the range officials since you would be shooting targets in the frame, only the excess or used paper would be hanging off the edges.

Smart! I will do this method next time I hit the range.
I will do my best to keep up.

Clever.

Ok guys here it is. I went to the range yesterday and attempted this challenge. I shot at 100 and 200m. While successfull at 100m, I failed at 200m on my 4th group. Damn! I'll try another day.
