Ok, I'm sure this has been gone over, but I'm at work, didn't see anything on the few few pages, and figured I'd post and ask, because no doubt my questions will be a bit different than other people's.
Some background - the rifle is a Norinco M305 (2012 vintage, a decent year with great tasting headspace, if a little bit of a "large flavour", this vintage has an odd background taste that reminds one of a stock made of recycled pop bottles, but at the end of the day, when the bottle (mag) is empty, the end result is still good
). I've got a Bula Forge (JRA I think sells them?) standard weight barrel, JRA bolt, USGI trigger, USGI gas system (unitized shortly here), USGI fiberglass stock, and an ARMS 18 steel mount (not mounted yet).
I find the iron sights decent, but I have a hard time with peep sights for some reason, not sure if it's just that I expect too much out of them, or I just haven't taken the time to learn them as well as I should, but I'd like to put an optic of some sort on that ARMS mount so I can use optics if I want, but still have the irons for backup/practice use.
My dilemma is, do I go with an optic and lose some functionality/speed at closer ranges (i.e. if I found myself wanting/needing to hit something at 25-50 yards), or do I go with some sort of red dot or holographic sight? The other issue at hand here is I have limited my finances on this optic, as I can't justify going with a big expensive optic for a gun like this - I can't imagine I'll regularly hit even 1 moa with it even with the best scope (though there's some hope for that I guess once it's been bedded and the nut behind the trigger gets his sh*t together, but certainly not much better than that, most likely ever). My biggest reason for liking an optic is the magnification (my eyes seem to suck more lately) and the ability to do range estimation with it. What I'd ideally like is a red dot/holographic sight of sorts that uses some sort of BDC system. I know that Trijicon makes them, but I'm not interested in selling other guns just to finance an optic (not right now anyways).
So any ideas? Are there any red dots out there that have any sort of BDC reticle FOR 308 Win? I know that there is the Vortex model that has something for 5.56mm, but I couldn't find anything less than a grand even for 308. Ideally I'd like to keep this around the 2-300 dollar range, or so. Less is better, if I can find something decent for 150-200 I'd be more than happy with that no doubt.
What I'm leaning towards right now is a Bushnell Tactical fixed 10x (but isn't this scope in mil rads? if so, it's probably off my list, as I'm comfortable with MOA and don't have interest in getting used to two systems right now), a Vortex Viper in 3-9 or 4-16 (or 2.5-10 if they make em, haven't looked), but even then do they have a BDC for 308? Might just have to go with mil-dot or similar, in MOA. Considering one of the vortex red dots but again, that's just a damn dot.
Idea's/suggestions?
