m1a tool kit

Darned if I know, but if you show up at the Interior BC Clinic or any one of my clinics across the country, we'll bring you up to speed! With the M14 / M1A tools/toys, the sky is literally the limit for tools! ;)

Cheers,
Barney

You can get started by picking up a 5/16 and a 11/64 drill bits from your local hardware store, you'll need these to clean the carbon out of your gas system. Just make sure they are at least 5" long or they won't be long enough.

You should also try to find a M14 combo tool, not sure how easy they are to find these days. I picked one up at a gun show about 7 years ago.

You may also want a Gas Cylinder Wrench, but if you're careful you can get away without one.

I'd say you definitely need more than a regular cleaning kit.

A combo tool, as suggested above, is a necessity. You will need to tighten the gas plug on occasion and clean the gas system. Combo tool is the easiest way to get that plug off and on. The combo tool will also make it easier, though not necessary, to get the trigger group out. Combo tools are still readily available in the US, not to mention that your rifle should have come with one if you bought the new Norinco (check the buttstock). I've also seen them for sale various places. About $8 each.

You will need cleaning tools for the gas system. The drill bits you need are actually #P (piston body), #15 (piston shank), and #26 (gas port). For the #15 it helps to have an extra long bit as this one has to reach down inside the piston.

A chamber brush is nice as it is hard to get in the chamber since the receiver heel is in the way. USGI chamber brushes run about $5 at the gun shows down in the US.

PS Just noticed that when Sunray referred to a "regular cleaning kit" he meant an M-14 kit, which includes the combo tool and chamber brush. That pretty much preempts my whole point :) but you'll still want the gas system bits.

russelld PM powmia56 & beg!
No realy he get's his gready little hands on Brand New still sealed in the package USGI 1's. Although sunray does make a great point about the Marstar version being great value for there price but the 1 bad thing about buying from Marstar is I can never just buy 1 item from them. As for the drill bit's that he mentions they work great and cost a whole heck of a lot less than my Sadlak 1's. After that there is nothing realy you would need to buy but the grease roller gadjet plus the bolt disassembely tool are quite nice & helpful to use.

How about if one needed a castle nut wrench?

You can also take a set of C-clamp vice grips ($6 at Canadian Tire, I think) and dremel the ends until they work.

I have posted a couple threads on making your own tools, one on the castle nut pliers and one on the gas system cleaning tools. I wish we could have a sticky. :)

Gas system tools

Apparently the castle nut pliers never got their own thread. Here is my original comment. Castle Nut Pliers

i simply love my vice grip clamp castlenut pliers , lot's to hang on to for leverage on those pesky chinese castlenuts.
the real deal ones work pretty good too ;)

The Battle Arms BAD tool is pretty neat. I already have too many single tools to pay 200$ for so tools I already have. But to someone that starts with nothing, want to service his M14 with good tools and would appreciate a do-it-all tool in the buttstock, I'd suggest it. It's not much more expensive that all the individual tools.

I don't know where to order it but it shouldn't be a problem to export a tool...
