M203 under barrel grenade launcher, obsolete?

He did bring in the very good stuff.
He told me he bought the M203s for $5 a pound.

He also told me that when he would visit the warehouses in Israel, the big chief would point at a pile of junk on the floor and say pick what you want. I will leave you with (some lower ranking individual) while you rummage.

He said he would then slip the lower ranking person some cash and he would turn around, Peter would then incorporate the good stuff from the racks into the junk pile.

The Karsts, said the same payment method when buying for Global back in the day as well. Uzis, M14s, FNs, HKs, Galils, etc etc by the pound.
Brings a tear to my eye.

Those were the good days, when conflict was low, and surplus was plentiful.
It was ironic that the British government couldn't supply their forces with enough L85s, but Peter had some.

What range are the iron sights good for? I would think those ones severely limit it’s usefulness.
Not really sure. They are pretty rudimentary. It did come with a micro aim point though. I haven't figured out what the maximum point blank range is on it yet. Lol1000002464.jpg

It is too easy to forget low-grade wholesale and salvage are not the same price as retail. There's a lot of shipping, customs fees, brokerage, and credit costs to factor in. But those are good stories!

Thanks for the picture. That looks like it would only be good for fairly close range, maybe 100m.

This is the type of sight we use for the M203 on the C7 and C8. It needs to practically be 45 degrees for maximum range.

I don't know if someone traded out the sights before I got it. It would make sense, who would put an aimpoint on a 40mm. Bummer, I got jipped.🤨

No, I stand corrected. On their sight they have the same aim point mine came with. It looks like they are leaning more towards less lethal applications rather than lobbing the fun stuff.

That one is a bit different than the first model of CF sight I saw before. It had a bit of this one, plus the distance “wheel” as on the Elcan base.
Do you have a photo of this mounted?

No, it’s not the exact sight but it’s very similar. I stumbled across the picture on the internet, that one’s from LMT. There is no elevation wheel on the current version, but there is something circular near the front. I’m not currently in a Battalion and it’s been a long time since I was an M203 gunner. I honestly don’t recall what the sight looked like when we used the US M203 mount in the late 90s early 2000s. We’ve used the current version since around 2002/3 IIRC.

Point blank range would be pretty short. The 40mm projectiles fly like a golf ball.

Direct aiming would maybe get you 40-50yds at best. Grenades fly slowly and have the aerodynamics of a brick.

Well, 45 degrees is max range for all ammunition.
Nope. Julian Hatcher tested that notion and he found the angle for max range is something like 33 - 35 degrees, at least for a 30-06. Its possible that angle could vary a bit depending on the projectile, but I doubt it would ever really be close to 45 deg.
