M305 and hunting

Whatever 165 grain ammo shoots the most accurately. 165 hunting bullets seem to give the best accuracy in a .308 and they'll kill any game you hunt. You'll have to try as many brands as you can to find the one or two that your rifle shoots best. No factory ammo is exactly inexpensive though.

Just pick up two boxes of winchester soft points, whatever's on the shelf, I'd go for 150gr at those ranges as it's common and lowish priced. Use one box to sight in and test, one to hunt.

Ive picked up some 168 gr. winchester ballistic silvertips for as low as 23$ a box. A pretty good bullet for deer hunting. Ive thought about hunting with an m-1a before but the weight kind of turned me off, alright if you are just sitting in a stand I guess.

For cheap hunting ammo i pull fmj's and use a 150 grain soft point in it's place, works great and i don't have to resight. Obviously if you don't have a press already the initial cost is a factor. Hunting ammo is cheap anyway, you only need one bullet, right. Seriously though, a 25 dollar box of ammo should last about 3 season i figure, i use surplus for fun at 8.00 a box.

Just a tip:
If you go over 165 grains, that's fine, but turn off the gas system to minimize damage to the rifle. It will turn it into a 5 rounds straight pull rifle but you can use any grainage or bullet combo over 165 you want.

150grain soft point has never let me down from winchester, or federal. The guy at the local gun store says he uses 130's on deer, and 150's(.308win) on moose, never had one get away.
Oh I know...I don't condone it myself. I was simply pointing out one of those facts of life. However, I would like to mention that while it would be obvious in the case of say genocidal, civil war ridden African nations in constant turmoil(I mean, compassionate hunting is the least of their worries..). Ok ok I've been told!!! Thank goodness knowone hunts deer with a bow and arrow or anything like that eh! How did anyone ever manage before bonded partitioned precision bullets were introduced.

What's the cost of three, four or five boxes of ammo for practice when you compare it to the money you plunk down to go deer or (costlier) moose hunting?
I see too many "grizzled veteran hunters" who brag they can go easily three seasons with one 20 shot box of ammo.
Obviously, they are the Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett kind and never need to practice to get perfect results.
And they probably pick up their rifle from under the stump they left it under last season...

it's the steady diet of 180's that bends/breaks things- 165-168's are what most of the guys that fancy heavy slugs use- the odd box of 180's won't hurt anything, the action is built around the 150,so that's the diet - give or take- i've had lots of misfeed and failures to close with 130 - i don't remember when imperial quit the scene, but it's been quite a while, think i'd give those boys a pass or a trip to the dustbin -now fresh 180's might be a different story-
