Hi guys

I am brand new to this platform and have never owned or fired one prior to this. I picked up a shortened M305 on the EE recently and after firing ten rounds of 147gr 7.62 ammo, the gun is no longer cycling.

I pulled the gun apart and everything appears to be intact and working as it should but am a loss as to why it is not cycling. I went out a couple days ago and tried some 165gr 308 rounds with the same result. The gun fires but does not cycle the action. (I am guessing this is due to the gas system)

Any constructive suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would try to eliminate the most basic problems first. Strip it down, clean thoroughly, lube and perform the 45 degree test to see if the op rod moves freely by gravity, less the spring. Also check to make sure the gas port lines up accurately between the barrel and the gas system.

If it was cycling fine and has stopped, check the gas nut and make sure it is tight. Could have been lose or not tightened enough after your cleaning.

Great video, thanks.

I checked that and everything works very smoothly until the trigger group is installed back on the receiver. At that point the action binds when the bolt opens approx 1.25" to 1.5".

Just from looking at it, it seems to be the bottom of the bolt hanging up on the hammer. This seems to be the case when I have the trigger group attached to the receiver when outside of the stock.

I wonder if this is why the guy sold it on the EE???

Quick question - did you lube your gas piston?

If you did, that is the problem. It should be run dry or else it will gum up in operation and inhibit smooth operation.

I also assume you liberally lubed the bearing surfaces in the bolt and receiver as well as your operating rod spring?

Claven 2, I had the gas piston lubed slightly on my last trip to the range. I have removed that in the last couple minutes. Everything else is lubed.

Speaking of lube, I see that different greases and even synthetic motor oil are suggested. Is there anything commercially available that has proven to work best? What about gunzilla?

I am going to try to post a picture of my bolt as it appears to have a curve to it..... This may be normal so please advise if it is. As I said, this platform is entirely new to me so I appreciate the tips.

had a cycling issue after I bought mine off the EE, do this test to check your gas block alignment:
pull action to the rear and engage bolt catch,
Shine a flash light down the end of the barrel,
look through the hole on the bottom of the gas tube ,
if you cant see a perfectly round circle of light your gas block is off the mark, heres a link to a vid on howto fix it

INFIDELicous45, I think that last bit of info may have solved it. I watched the vid and checked that part of the gun. It is all good and tight. It took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about with the gas port and seeing a circle of light, but........ then I found that the flat head screw that adjusts the gas was sitting at 45 degrees. Flipped it so it is vertical and now I see what you are talking about., "I see the light"

Odds are good that was exactly what the problem was, gas system was shut off.

As I was saying..... When is the next m14 clinic near the lower mainland?

Thanks everyone for your help.
