M305 Field Strip, Safety On?

Hi guys,

When field stripping a M305/M1A are you supposed to have the safety on when removing/replacing the trigger group?

Can you damage anything by removing the trigger group with the safety in the incorrect position?

In all the tutorials I have seen, the safety is off, but I read here that the safety is supposed to be on...

My 305 allows me to remove the trigger group with the safety off

Removing the trigger with safety off is fine. I also don't think you can engage safety if you haven't engaged the action (cocked).

I think the hammer needs to be cocked for the trigger group to come out.
Engaging the safety prevents you from pulling the trigger by accident, thus releasing the hammer, making a dent in the wooden table and having to explain your wife about it.
