M305 for Hunting?

My first deer was with my M305, scoped with 150 partitions my 4 & 5 year olds reloaded. I put an EOTech on it and a cheekpiece for the next year and got another deer. The EOTech is sweet on the M14.

As the gang was departing for a morning hunt, the "old guys" reminded everyone to top off their mags [they use DM rifles]. I hold up 2 20 rounders and said Holy F*ck guys, I don't have enough ammo :D

I drilled a few groundhogs with my TRW M14 back in 1990. That TRW M14 loved Speer's 125 gr TNT bullets. I used iron sights. All of my shots were just over 100 steps away. I shot the earthpigs from sitting (crosslegged and slung in), standing (off hand) and prone position (slung in, also). I was using a leather M1907 sling just like my NRA High Power game.

Damn, I miss those $ 450 M14's from Israel !

I started taking mine this fall for deer. Unfortunately, I had no luck this year. It's the same gun I use for IPSC 3 gun competition, Service Condition Matches, and everything else in between. One gun for all conditions. A word of advice, have a good sling for the long hikes in the woods. It's not that heavy gun to carry, although I've heard complaints. Soldiers carried the Garand in worst conditions during the war, but I'm sure you are a big strong boy.

I use handloads of Nosler 150 gr. ballistic tips propelled with the same load I use for my 150 FMJ for the matches.

I've had my M14 for two years now and have minimal hunting time with it due to lengthy mods, most recently, missing the entire 2007 deer season. Being only 5 ft, with the front carry strap, the rifle was always prone to plugging into the ground and catching things while walking these steep hills of BC. I had mine cut to 18.5" to help with the problem. This rifle does get heavy, especially hikes into the alpine. I took it on a moose hunt up in Chetwynd, BC(grizzly country) and had to hike with it for 3kms uphill. I sure missed my 7mm WSM then. Love my gun and I will still take it everywhere but will use it mainly for blackie road hunting and short hikes. For serious hunting, I'd prefer to bring my lighter hunting rifle. The LCF with the excessive mags(i can never take jus 1 or 2) and all doesnt make up for the much needed lightening of weight during serious hunting trips, packing game from deep in the alpine. IMO

now, i just learnt this on this thread, that original m14's are prohibs...why is that, how does that make sense if their not "evil communist" rifles and are long barreled. Were they full auto in the civi market?

There is a semi-automatic/automatic selector on the M14. That is the reason why it is prohibited.;)

Used mine this this year to bag my whitetail.165 gr. nosler ballistic tip. low
power variable scope. quick to load, never jams. whats not to like about it.
use it mostly when hunting here in sask. when you drive around fields get out
to walk a bush then get back in vehicle to do it all again many times a day.
but when I know I'm going to be walking a long ways then I carry my old
Browning A-bolt.

Got a beautiful 10 pointer with mine. Out of the box, not modified M14S from Dark Int. And I shot it from prone (wanted to send a picture to Mr. Cooper)... 165 gr SST Hornady ammo.... Bang-flop.

I haven't hunted since with mine, because all the mods made it heavier (more accurate albeit) but I plan on using the second one for hunting (scout setup or plain irons)

building up a chopped 19" barrel pistol gripped "hunter" m14s right now. It will be my main hunting rifle for interior b.c. hunts for mulies and mooses. If i feel the need to really reach out there, I'll have my 7mm mag for back up.

Actually there isn't, but they have the capability of having one applied. There was a legal challenge going on about this, in that the selector switches were a seperate part that wasn't actually issued with the rifle (issued to commanders instead who then, based on perceived need, would or would not issue them to thier men), they don't actually have select fire capability without that particular part. Now that Tomlinson is dead, I don't think it will go anywhere (it was one of his projects), and too bad too. - dan

The M14 receiver is ready to receive these parts rendering it prohibited.

The M14 receiver is ready to receive these parts rendering it prohibited.

actually, the ones in canada are not ready to recieve these parts-the shafts are welded shut and wing that engages the trigger hooks has been ground off- this was done as a requirement by canada customs so they couldn't be counted as machine guns at the time- in isreal, before they were boxed up and made it here- same deal with the uzis ,fns, and stens that were imported at the same time- all either had parts modified or replaced to ensure they DID NOT have full auto capability or were NOT EASILY MODIFIED back to capability- then, a couple of years later, the UZIs had a requirement that 1- you had to send it to the forensics lab in edmonton for inspection to insure it WOULDN'T FIRE FULL AUTO under any circumstances( they tried to play with this one too, by using soft ammo that wouldn't push the bolt all the way back so it would go full auto, but there was a court action to stop this) , and the recommendation that a washer be installed over the pull pin for the trigger group so you couldn't access it- so you can't access to clean it either, but that doesn't matter
you then had to send it back for inspection , and , if it passed , you got it back- if you included an unblocked mag with it, you lost the gun-
mine was gone for a year or so
then when the libs got into power, they changed all this mess to prohibited anyway. started the seperate att thing and then finally there came the LETTER- along every step of the way , the law of the day was followed -
incidentally, national match m14s also have their selector shafts welded shut

Like you said these receivers welded or not have been designed semi and full auto. So they are automaticaly prohibited. Thanks Lieberals.

The semi-auto BAR 30-06 sometimes goes 3rd burst and it is included in the registration as a "problem" exceptable to this conversion. this was written in when they first can to canada

Used mine last year, work great for spot-and-stalk and still hunts, however in dense bush can be a pain, that's why I've got my second M14 chopped to 18 1/2 especially for driven and spot-and-stalk hunts. Not so good for road fill-a-freezer operations - M14's action is too noisy. This saved quite a few deer's lives ;)
