M305 fun..A friend just showed me this on the net...

Well, I don't really think we can do anything about it...just like I don't really think we can do anything about people who sweep their muzzles around, people who shoot without knowing exactly what is out there behind their target...

People who are going to be unsafe are just going to be unsafe. I can understand ranges making rules like "no bump firing" because they may have a limited ability to provide a high enough backstop for people who screw this up (although it's pretty simple).

But on crown land, we have no control over what shooters are doing. So even if I agree with you that it is something to worry about, all it means is that I have to worry about it because it's beyond our control to stop!

And thanks on the avatar RK...I take compliments to that personally as I own the contents!

Though I agree with you fundamentally, I believe those are bad examples for your argument. If I saw someone sweeping a barrel they would certainly get an earful from me. If they were shooting my guns they would get 1 warning and then it would be no more bang bang for them.

If someone was competent in the use of the firearms I wouldn't care if they were bump firing, but would you want someone who sweeps their muzzle doing that sort of thing?

That is an interesting point...I was assuming the bump-firer was off on crown land by himself somewhere, and just meant to illustrate that in an uncontrolled environment there is not much that can be done even about serious safety errors. Similarly I suspect there are people out there who often shoot without knowing what is beyond their target, and again there is not much anyone can do, so even if we all agreed bumpfiring was worse than Hitler we couldn't do much about it.

I definitely agree with you though, if a shooter is the type to be pointing guns at other people carelessly, I would think they are not responsible enough to bump-fire safely!
