M305 Gas Piston

I took my brand new M305 to the range and all I have to say I love this rifle to death.
I have question I always clean my guns after shooting be it 10 rounds to 200. I took the gas system apart and when I was putting it together I have noticed that one you tighten gas cylinder lock (I tightened the gas tube lock as far as I could) and gas plug the piston sticks out of the gas tube about 2mm. The gas operating rod does not sit flush with the gas tube it sits on the piston that is sticking out. Is this how the gas system should be assembled?
