I want to pick up a new M305, but I'd like to get more than just target time in with the rifle.

Im sure others have hunted with this rifle before. Is everyone just using commercial .308 ammo for hunting?

I assume there's no such thing as non FMJ 7.62x51. Haha.

Im just worried about firing the .308 round in this rifle. Should I be worried?

I've shot both Federal Vital shok and Power shok hunting ammo through the M14's and it delivers better accuracy than milsurp. About 1.5" at 100 yards. I used the premium Federal with Nosler ballistic tips to take a deer in 2007 with mine. Good ammo that I'd be confident out to 200 yards with (I tested it at that distance and it shoots accurately at 200 yard, plenty good for where I'd hunt).

if you get 165swith a PREMIUM bullet , there's the answer to all your problems- with proper bullet placement, you don't need 180's anyway-

Ok, I've read before to keep the bullet weight 165 or lower with the .308 rounds.

Just all this reading about the higher energy of the hunting rounds kinda worried me.

I suppose Ill go ahead and order me one of these bad boys.

I have harvested a number of deer with Hornady's 165 grainers. Not only are they great on Mule deer but are very accurate in my M14S. I used them one year when I realized I had no handloads ready. I quickly sighted in with the Hornady cartridges and found them to match my handloads almost perfectly.

I plan on using them every time I hunt. By the way, nothing beats the M14s (M305) for a great followup shot.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Norc M-14 marked for 7.62x51mm ammo? In which case, not compatible with SAAMI .308 Winchester (which the throat is less steep)?

My Norc is stamped .308. The main difference between .308 and 7.62 NATO is that the NATO chamber has a much greater allowable headspace.

Although many Norinco M14s have excessive headspace by SAAMI standards, I am not aware of any catastrophic failures resulting from firing factory .308 out of one of these rifles.

It's a heavy rifle, gets heavier the farther you carry it. It will hunt well and you can get some decent hunting with 150 + soft points.

Sweet, now I'm getting excited. I'm going to purchase one from Moving Target. $575 shipping and taxes included with the synthetic stock. Doesn't sound like a terrible deal.

Now all I need is a good scope mount and a scope...any suggestions?

Are the Marstar accessories any good? ( Stainless Op rod, buffer pad, shims, scope mount etc

Yes, I recon that it won't be the most pleasant thing to drag through the woods, but im still a young buck.

Definetly on the Marstar op rod spring guide, easiest and cheapest accuracy mod. Get a couple or ten 5/20 mags while you're at it. Marstar has them for $35 and they're way easier to get out than the shorty mag.

You'll want an ARMS #18 mount but look at spending $200 + to get one. You'll be happy with it a long time so it's worth the money. I think Wolverine has them.

I shoot mine with irons and have no trouble hitting an eight by eight piece of steel at 300m

Get yourself a damn good sling if you want to go trekking with the monster lol.

this can be alleviated by use of the proper sling- in nam, we used m60 nylon slings( the ones with the big, fat shoulder/neck patch) and hung them like a 60- memory doesn't serve as to HOW we hung them( no zip ties at the time- like what the isrealis use on the m16) - the "regulation " one does nothing more than keep the rifle on your shoulder at parade
and forget about the 150's if you have anything bigger than whitetail in the area- i have 4 of the darned things and they ALL perform better andgroup tighter with 165-168s- the tightest groups i had were with 180's ( the old m118slr load with a 180 bullet) but that's too hard on the gun

I never bothered with nylon buffers and dohickeys. One thing I did do was have the gas system unitized. It cost me $20 for 3 tiny welds (some guys get it done for doughnuts). That cheap improvement made my groups shrink. With IVI brass, 165 grain Remington core-lokt, and the recommended H4895, I could easily get groups wel below .5 inch at 100 yards.

I also skipped on the expensive ARMS mount and instead mounted a 3rd Gen mount. I mounted it in a way that the scrfews will never loosen, and the mount has been rock solid for years now.

T-star is right, the M14S (M305) love bullets in the 165 and 168 weights.

Get a 3 point sling if you want to carry your Norc in the bush hunting. I have a Specter Gear 3 point CQB sling and I carried my Norc 3 days in the bush with no problems. DS Tactical carries Specter Gear slings.

I'm here fellas; Yes get the best scope mount you can afford. I'm an ARMS18 fan and Skullboy is a Smith 2024 (but they are hard to have shipped north of the border to us terrorists under the US Homeland Security #### loss prevention committe rules). :D

Yes, these mounts are expensive, but you will end up paying that much in Advils when you buy a cheap pot metal scope mount with ONE  screw for $ 50 at a local gun show. Save your pennies. Poach blue buckets for wine/beer bottles... better yet, quit smoking and you can afford another M14 from Moving Target or Ellwood Epps before you know it. Cheap out by avoiding fast food restaurants and eating salads at home (chicken caesars are my baby). Rent movies with your partner/wife/gf/bf instead of visiting that new Galaxy theater and paying outrageous prices to see movies easily pirated and released by the Xhinese Kommunists from Shanghai.

There! Does that sound better ? Don't cut corners on quality mounts/rings/optics. Save your money by (dare I say?) quitting drinking and cutting back yer alcohol intake and put your money into something to watch "Full Metal Jacket" with..... Are you from Texas? Only steers and queers come from Texas and YOU don't look like a steer. Do you suck czck?

Okay, I had to get that out of my system with Gunnery Sgt R Lee Ermy!

Wanna have some fun reloading for the M14? I like shooting lots of 125 gr and 130 gr Speer TNT or Hornady Vmax bullets from my M14. Big boom, NO recoil. Great for your wife/gf/bf/kids .... Lots of fun factor!! Also great on deer and earth pigs and 'yotes....

Enjoy the addiction!

I bought NATO for practice. Also bought a box of Winchester ballistic tip from Walmart. These are 168 gr. Silver Ballistic Tip $40 @ wallyworld. They are costly! One box will do me. Your other options are .308 in 180 grain by remington, these run about $30/box wallyworld.
