OK so I am new to this platform, had my rifle for about 7 months and 300 rounds through it. There are a few parts on it I would like to replace, but for the time being I am trying to learn the rifle with the stock Chinese parts on it. New parts all in due time. (no sense in building a race car if you don't know how to drive it right?)

I have asked numerous questions in the past and found the replies to be very helpful. I have also been through the stickies in depth and just want to confirm (re-affirm?) a couple things.

My rear sight has a full range of 61 or 62 clicks. Is this normal for the Chinese rear sight?

My rear sight zeroes out at 100 M at a whopping 32 clicks. From the stickies I know it's supposed to be about 6 - 8 clicks. I would be content with 10 - 15. This means I have to FILE DOWN my front sight post right? By quite a bit I would assume? Obviously I'd rather err on the side of caution and file it down "not enough" as opposed to "too much."

I believe 10-12 clicks from bottom is about where it should normally be at with a 100 yard zero.

I've heard that from bottomed out it's either 4 or eight clicks up to 100m. I think it depended on how the individual armorer set it up. Mine are set a 7 clicks.

Yes file it down or replace it with a lower sight then reset your rear sight

Set your sight at 11 clicks from the bottom.
If you're still shooting way low (you will be if it takes you 32 to get on at 100 meters) file the front post slowly and squarely until your Point of Impact is exactly at Point of Aim at 100 meters.
Then hold the left rear sight knob steady and unscrew the screw. Back it right out but don't pull it out obviously. You are trying to disengage the knob from the rear sight aperture so that when you turn it, it doesn't raise or lower the aperture.

Line up the knob so the 100 meter mark on the knob is in line with the notch on the rear sight base right next to the knob. Again, hold the knob steady with your fingers in that position and then retighten the screw so it engages the aperture again.

Basically if you are now using standard 147gr or similar ammunition close to the 7.62 NATO round, you can engage at 100 meters. Say you want to engage a target at 200 meters. Then it's two clicks up from the 100 meter mark. Then you want to engage a target at 300 meters from the 200 meter setting, it would be three clicks up from the 200 meter knob mark and so on.
Not precision MOA or anything but well within acceptable battle rifle effectiveness.
You also now have up to 11 clicks of adjustment below the 100 meter mark to fine tune at closer distances and a set known "Zero stop" at the 100 meter mark on the knob if you want to start doing the math to shoot out to distance again.
It's one of the best sights ever put on a rifle in my opinion. Second only to the M16A2 sights maybe in user versatility.
The sights on the M14 were designed to be used in that manner for use with the trajectory/ballistics of the 7.62 NATO cartridge keep in mind.

There really isn't that much need to swap out every nut screw and bolt on the Norinco M14's. Just slight mods to the rifle as is. A lot of the "upgrades" are complete hogwash as far as improving accuracy. Tighten the gas system, set up the sights properly as I posted above, make sure the barrel and gas system is indexed, do an easy light trigger file job on the sears. Dumping hundreds into USGI bolts etc is just a waste of money if you're after accuracy improvements.
Money better spent on good quality ammunition or handloads.

There's a lot of dudes that have dumped literally thousands of dollars into these rifles and my $700 out of the box Rem700 in .308 Win will put them to shame as far as accuracy and consistency. Just something to keep in mind anyhow depending on what you are expecting out of this rifle in the first place.

Hope that helps!

OK thanks to everyone for the help and advice! I'm trying to improve this rifle without spending money on new parts. I'm not expecting a precision rifle like an R700 or other bolt. I just want to try to make it better than it was from the Chinese factory. If I could consistently hit the gong at 200m I would be satisfied.

I WOULD like to get one of those Dlask adjustable gas locks and a spring guide but that's about it. So far I've fixed the loose op rod guide (getting the roll pin back in was a challenge), and i had to fix the front sight as well because the right side protector wing was bent out too far, that was also a bit of a challenge but I wedged some coins (2 dimes and a quater) between the centre post and the good wing and compressed it in a vice until it looked symmetrical. It worked out pretty good actually.

The other thing I did was strip everything off the stock, everything except the front sling mount and the metal thing that the saddles the trigger group. I sanded the seams and blemishes out of the stock with some 220 grit and then taped off all the interior parts and the front sling mount. Then it got 2 coats of olive drab krylon followed by 2 more coats of krylon clear coat. I just got everything back together and function tested it. It looks pretty good. I will post a picture later I'm getting harped at to start making dinner.

(Without looking at the links) The word to search is, "come ups" for NRA High Power shooting. The number of clicks up and at longer ranges right, is well understood.
