M305 is heavy

what's that m14 doing on your shoulder?- the proper place is in your hands, properly balanced- that's what happened in basic- the first 2 weeks- no slings, and your rifle never left your side

I learned battle rifles from my warrant officer in cadets using a FAL 308, the thing never left my shoulder. My core captain taught us large bore Enfield No.4 and No.7 shooting and we always shouldered it. Before cadets I was taught to shoot on a Crosman air rifle and No.4 Enfield, always shouldered.

You're supposed to hip fire? or did I just drink too much camomile tea

This ####'s pretty good lol

I can say this, there are mods you can do to a Norc that are required and ones that seem to be wishfull thinking.
Each rifle may require different tuning but in general this is what I have noticed:
I replaced the rear sight assembly with an M1A set.
Changed the stock to an M1A wood one.
My op rod guide was loose, very loose (probably defective loose as all others I have seen were solid in place) I had a friend do a couple quick clean welds to stick it in place in line with the barrel.
Other than that my rifle is a stock Norinco.
Before you go crazy and start bedding your stock and welding every joint etc pick up some high quality ammo and see what your rifle can actually do.
I tried 20 rounds of Norma .308 Win. I shot the tightest group at 100 meters from the prone I have ever achieved with any rifle.
The M14 as we own it is not a sniper rifle, it's a battle rifle, so I could shim the gas system, bed the stock, replace every part with USGI stock parts for thousands of dollars but would it shrink my incredible groups with quality ammo any more? No.
Ask yourself what you want from it. If it's accuracy, you have to realize that there is only so much you can do to accurize a $500 Chinese semi automatic battle rifle in .308 Win.
Just my two cents. I'm sure there are others that will swear they can hollow out a dime with theirs at 800 meters because they have a USGI bolt etc lol
Just approach it with calm logic is all I'm saying and you will quickly thresh the husks from the grain so to speak.
Cheers!
What kind of groupings is that?

I cant seem to find a straight answer on the accuracy of these rifles. I want a new hunting rifle and would prefer the m14 (mostly because of the badassness of it) but if I cant get 1MOA with handloads and a decent scope then I dont think it will be worth it. Plus, Im regularly shooting at deer that are 200 or more yards away.

Its because of this guys m14 that I want to kill deer with it

Wrong stock & barrel to achevie this group. Actually even with a JAE stock and a Kriger barrel and handloads it would still be a chore to consitantaly achieve real MOA every time. Hence why even the DOD still issues bolt actions to this day. Not even a easy task for AR-10 platform to achieve consitantly.
You should be looking for a flat shooting cartridge like 7mm and a sako or tikka bolt action.
Then again give me a Nork M14 in a USGI fiberglass stock and 2 hours to prep it and if there is a deer with in 300 meters of me during opens season. Well...
Lets just say there will be meat in my frezzer. ;)

OMG, I haven't laughed that hard in a LONG time....well said

On a side note, don't shorten it, keep the wood (if you have it) and just do some basic exercises (pushups, situps, chinups etc.). It's really not that bad, especially if its a Norc. You want heavy, try the Springfield match versions, they're like 13lbs!

I love mine btw, great platform. I have both and they're a beast, but in a good way ;)

Good topic and great comments: vagasil, thick wrists and all. Comedy gold!

Some of us are 150 lbs with high metabolism (no fat), so this will never be a "light" rifle for us. Then again, there must have been some skinny dudes in Nam' so the advice about the gym is probably the best.

Also, wikipedia says a loaded AK47 (30 rd mag) is about the same weight as a M14 and most NVA in Nam' were like 100 pounds soaking wet, so I guess I should suck it up!

I took the tools out of the butt of my shiny new Norinco and w/empty 5 rd mag, it's still 9.5 lb with fiberglass stock. Any suggestions on a good sling???

Also, where do you guys "carry it more" to get used to it without neighbours thinking you are a nutjob, outside hunting season?

Honestly, the M305 is just right. Speaking of heavy rifle, anyone who ever handle a VZ52/57 know what is a heavy rifle, heavy for such a little round(7.62x39) and to not forget a Garand also, but the M305, VZ and the Garand feel just alright, feel like you holding something in your hand:D On a side note, i think its a bad idea to remove the cleaning kit on the M305 butt stock to save weight. That kit can save you trouble while hunting. Tripping on something, barrel full on crap.....that little kit can save you the hassle to go back to the camp to clean that plugged barrel. Just my 2 cents:)

Agreed, but its in my pack.

remove the cleaning kit to save weight?- useless- remove the cleaning kit to STOP THE RATTLE?- now there is an idea- or wrap the collar in the combo tool with a couple of patches- seriously, most guys that carried the darned thing ( and this goes for the 16 as well) req'd a second cleaning kit from qm stores and carried this on either the belt or in their ruc- without the patches , that collar rattles like crazy, and you can NEVER get that STUPID LITTLE DOOR LATCH to open when you want it-

you can only lighten a m14 soo much if you pick the right stock and keep all the junk off it(tactical stuff you don't need)

In 20 years of hunting I never got my barrel "full of crap". I've sacrificed a knee or elbow here or there to keep my rifle clean, but never needed a cleaning rod. I don't pack one with my bolt action and don't plan on packing one with my M305. At 150 lb I'm pretty "light on my feet", I suppose.

You can replace the flip up metal butt pad with a rubber one to cut more weight. I also found the "chu" wood stock lighter than any other M14S stock. An Allen or Butler neoprene sling is good for shoulder carry, but while actively hunting I would be hand carrying.

Don't know about your local range rules, but if they allow it, you can carry it out while changing targets.

No one suggested to throw the junk in the trunk out or to leave it at home. Carrying cleaning rods, brush, oil, and a multi-tool in your pack is a lot different than carrying it in your hands, or more precisely in the stock that's in your hands.

You may have better luck in the way you carry the rifle to your range. I can imagine that you're probably carrying a bunch of ammo, targets, sandbags, stapler, target stands etc etc etc. It's amazing how much junk collects in the bottom of my shooting box, yours is probably the same.

If you're snowshoeing you might consider a pulk:

You can make a cheap one out of a kids sled and some rope and PVC pipe. It makes a huge difference to your back and for your legs. Work smarter, not harder.

Out of twelve pages of replies there's like what 6 helpful answers to the OP's question? It's like being in a discussion with stupid jocks from highschool or something.

I really feel for you DUDE. Not the best rifle to carry in the woods. Sorry, just had to add my 2 cents DOHHH!
I jouined a gym to help me out with the carry issue,

I like my gun! but I've heard this before.

As I would want to keep my rifle as close to original as possible (full length barrel, wood stock), one thing is was thinking of was sanding the stock down...

It's been noted that the chi wood stocks are a bit thick; sand it down to a slimmer profile, that'll help a bit. Plus swapping out the metal butt plate, perhaps some hollowing of the stock out here and there with a drill (under the butt plate for example)....

That's all I got. I'm too cheap to get one o'them USGI fibreglass stocks, and I think that's as far as lightening these can go, IMHO
