Dug the 305 out of lockup (been more than a year... sorry sweetheart) and am thinking of making some changes.

I know the search engine is my friend but I'm still missing a few answers.

Mount - Looking to mount an Eotech and was wondering about either the Rooster or SA scout mounts. Don't think I need the longer SA and Rooster availability may be an issue right now. How is the Marstar scout mount? Haven't read the greatest things about their standard aluminum mount but the scout is steel and is certainly a simpler setup so......

-Will any/all of the above fit the Norinco Barrel profile (Not GI spec right?)?
-If they won't fit then I will probably go with a Smith Ent 2024. Will the Eotech fit the weaver mount?
-Can I co-wit the irons through the Eotech with any of the above?

"SOCOM" Chop - Going to have Smithtac do the chop for me. Do they do gas cylinder shiming/welding too? Didn't see it on their list and it is 04:00 so I'd better not call :) .

Stocks - I'm lovin' the Boyds Pepper Lam. I see they have them in the "Factory Fit & Finished" condition. Anyone order one like this? How was the fit? I don't mind doing a little work on it but I don't want it sloppy.

Not that it really turns my crank, but, anyone have a Marstar custom aluminum stock yet? Any good? POS?

Thanks for any help

For a scout mount there is a relatively new product out that you may wish to consider. I can't remember the name at the moment (only on my second cup of coffee ;) ) but it replaces the entire handguard with a black metal rail. It sits low enough that you can't even see it when using irons.

I think it looks better than the other options and should be very solid. Gives you complete freedom to choose the distance to mount the holo at, and sits much lower than other options for it - which has always been my complaint with the M14/Eotech combination. They sit so dang high compared to the irons.

They claim it can allow you to co-witness with the irons ...

Well now that would be pretty cool. Although, I'm not to worried about co-wit w/ the Eotech on (like my window clear) but somthing like an ARMS quickrelease should put it up high enough to clear the irons and make it quick to remove to use the irons.

Hurry up and get your 5th cup of coffee into ya' and get me that name :D

EDIT - This guy ultimak.com/m8.htm

I have one of the Boyds finished stocks in the Nutmeg and two in the Walnut and they are first class replacements. Fit and finish is very good and tight. I had to do a bit of work to relieve a small bit of wood at the rear right hand side of the receiver on all of them to get a better fit but it’s really not a big deal at all. Order the one you like and don’t think twice.

Send Jeff an e-mail and he will answer it for you.

You can't go wrong with the Valley Guns "SOCOM" conversion, "top notch".

Or this one, built by Dycor of Edmonton...

I paid as follows in October:

Barrel job $ 75.00
Slotted hand guard $20.00
Vortex Flash Hider $90.00
R-33 Scout mount $55.00
R-33 M-305 Navy sight. $75.00
Fixed shipping $35.00

Sub total $350

GST 6% $21.00
PST 8% $28.00

TOTAL $399

He does good work.

Jeff supplies all the parts, when they are in stock. You may want to call/email for availability.

Yes, I completely agree, as Jeff had my rifle for almost three months while he waited on Rooster (as many of you still are  ). Jeff has since changed his policy to not accept a job until he has the parts you want in hand.

He's a very upfront and straight talking fellow. I highly recommend him.

There is a scope style mount shown at:
h t t p://ultimak.com/M8.htm. I think it is the
one mentioned earlier.
I don't personally own that mount, so I
can't recommend for or against it.
If you are having the barrel shortened, it
must stay over 18.5 inches or the weapon
will become restricted. I expect all of the
gunsmiths recommened already know this, but
it is worth checking on.

APG

does anyone know if that will fit on a Norinco????

*Compatibility: The UltiMAK M8 mount fits only standard, GI spec barrels. In the current Springfield line-up, the compatible models are; M1A Standard, M1A Scout Squad, SOCOM 16, and SOCOM II. The "Loaded Standard" and all of their "Match" and "Tactical" models have heavier-than-standard barrels, which will not allow M8 mount installation. Chinese M1A clones have standard barrels and fit nicely with the M8 mount. If your M-14 or M1A does not fit any of the above descriptions, you should call the manufacturer and ask if the barrel is of standard M-14 outer diameter specs, including the size and location of the op-rod guide. As a side note; the original U.S. military production "National Match" M-14s had standard weight barrels. Among the differences was that the bore tolerances were halved.
