M305/Norc M14 with Italian wood stock

The taller front sight goes with the shorter barrel. My cousin got a new Norc socom with a normal front sight. We bottomed out the rear sight and were still hitting high.

Holy Chit Batman! Those are beautiful looking stocks. Are they Boyd's stocks or sourced from Italy? :D

Dsiwy: Thanks for posting those pictures. Wowsers, I'm impressed. This is a fair price for a newbie just starting out in the M14 addiction and with a low comfort level playing with the walnut finishing and sanding. :)

Cheers, and thanks!

Barney:
I will bring those italian walnut m305 at your Trenton clinic for fine tune. Use your magician hand.

Another weird thing I noticed on mine was that the Norc front sight post is actually a lot taller than the sight ears! My replacement USGI one is normal with the sight post about 2/3rds to 3/4's the height of the sight ears so the ears actually protect the post.

The shorties require a taller front blade sight, because of the shorter sight radius. If you call Springfield Armory, they will sell you a taller front sight with appropriate "ears" (the height being in the block under the blade, rather than the blade) suitable for a shorter barrelled M1A (I believe it's the Scout Squad which has an 18" barrel). Just speak with their international sales department

Great info. will do. Do you know if they charge any crazy import fees like Numrich, or is it just the part price plus shipping?

The wood stocks and handguards look amazing!!!

As far as stock refinishing. I use BLO as others have mentioned, but I would do a very light sand, tack off and apply the BLO using a couple of scrubs of BLO along with 0000 steel wool. Using friction to help the BLO enter the stock. I would then do a few coats of just BLO and once you see it stop being absorbed then you're golden. I would then apply 2 coats 1/3 Tom's mix of bees wax, turpentine, BLO to seal it up.

I ordered a SA Scout Squad Front Sight, think they shipped it to me for $10, and the part itself is not expensive.
The post still sits a little lower than the factory tall post, but it's protected by the ears and flawlessly machined.

I haven't had it out to the range yet, but I think it will be tall enough, although I might end up with my rear sight starting nearly or all the way down.
Fine by me, I don't mind a slight hold under sight picture.

I can't see these scout squad front sights on the web-site. Did you just email them and ask for one?

Just called and ordered a Springfield Armory Scout Squad front sight and screw as my tall Norc. one is warped. This is the last part I need to start to shoot her. I have it in the basement now doing the hungry cheap method of filling in the OP Rod retaining pin cut-out with epoxy as these stocks are inletted for the US longer retaining pin. After that, I just have to sand, re-stain, and oil the stock and handguard and she will be ready for some pictures and a range day. Hopefully the headspace will be ok to shoot both .308 and 7.62X51.

Please post up picture of your refinished stock.
Looking forward for the range report.

Little twins :p

lycan, The twins are pretty!!! :) Cannot wait to hear how they perform at the range!

They perform flawlessly. Action is very smooth which I would say it is smoother than my SAI loaded. Barrel index is perfect out of the box and it shoot way more accuracy than my other DA SOCOM 18. These is the best batch M305 I haven't seems for many years. Looks like they have improved the QC from last couple years. Now, I need time to refinish these beautiful stocks.

Here is the 5 shot group on the other day. Straight from post office to range.
100 yards iron sight with cheap Norc's copper wash 7.62x51mm ammo.

I believe it would group better with other experience shooter( I am not a good shooter ).

Cheese :p

Very nice looking wood, nice finished rifle, and great groups out of the box with Nork ammo. Who needs to spend 3000 for these rifles? If these rifles check out for all the known quirks and are good to go, I can see Springfield taking a little hit in our market again.

Check you bolt for good bearing on both, and get the headspace checked by others who offer this for free using your fired brass cases with gas shut off. Then you can compare headspace every 1000 rounds or so to see how well the bolt and lugs are holding up. Some say some are too soft, but mine only has the park starting to wear after 1200 rounds. I just took a good look at my bore with mirror and magnifier and the throat looks perfect after 1200 rounds. Bullet insertion at muzzle looks the same as new. Without proper bore gauges however to compare new to 1000+ rounds, this is only guesstimate.
Enjoy your new rifles.

Thanks for your advice. I will send the fired case to Barney for headspace check at his clinic. There still a lot more for me to learn about M14 platform
The Springfield sure is a nice gun but Norinco has my heart. You can have a nice pimp up Norc's with scope for the price of SAI.

Very nice indeed.
I was wondering if they shot as well as they looked, and that seems to be the case.
You could be looking at 1.5 with handloads.

Enjoy :)
