M305 Op Rod Bent? And should I care?

It's always been like this but originally I thought it was just a crooked op rod guide. Then I installed the Blackfeather Stock from M14.ca and with a perfectly centered op rod guide, it's as crooked as before. I've included a bunch of pics and a video that I will post later in hopes someone could tell me what's wrong, or to not worry about it. I've fired 20 rounds with this rifle and it seemed to work fine. It is a little grindy when I rack the action.

Am I just being too cautious?

Don't mind me fumbling with the trigger group.... was going to edit but I'm in a hurry.

Mine is like that, in a Blackfeather as well. Over 500 rounds through it and no issues at all. My theory was that the gas system splines were off-centre but perhaps I need to take another look as well. It certainly looks like your op rod doesn't align with the barrel.

Darn... my older USGI M14's made by Winnie, H&R, and TRW all had op rods that were halfway of the op rod to the side. No kidding. So what we do at our M14 clinics, is replace the pin after peening the barrel where the op rod sits to 'raise the metal' so to speak. Then re-install.

In summary, yer #### won't fall off

I can fix this baby if it really drives you crazy. A real simple fix.... PM or send me a message! :D

I got yer backs... :)

Cheers,
Barney (formerly known for over 10 years here as 'hungry')

Thanks Hungry. With the old stock I had followed your instructions and had it centered. But with the Blackfeather stock and oprod guide, the OPRG has to be completely straight to fit in the stock, so I can't compensate. But if my #### won't fall of the way it is, then that's how it'll stay. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to blow up in my face.

I have a Black Arrow ORSG on order. The rifle is a Norc M305 in a Sage stock. I have a feeling I'll be PMing Barney in a short while. Good to know someone in the know.

BLLAAA!!!
HAHAHAHA!!!
Snake oil bit's again!
So sorry for you but that ain't right and yes I would fix this before shooting it again.

P.S. Don't you just hate it when I am right eh CGNer's :p
Told ya so! LoL!!!

so is the oprod showing any wear anywhere?
in the saddle as it slides under the barrel as the oprod gets to your bind point?
some rifles have this problem when fitting an anchored oprod guide.
could be a warped oprod...... solve by lapping the bind points with extra fine lapping compound (take the bolt out, keep the guide rod and spring in)
BUT..... if your oprod is banging the take down notch, as in a upward twist as it comes rear...... no good....... or if oprod is wiggle when up and down force is applied to handle...... no good
experienced hands could possibly bend the oprod straight but I doubt that kinda help is available. barney might have an in here

check that the oprod guide mounting location on barrel is concentric to bore. I've seen many of these new shorties with that barrel location machined off of the bore center by significant amounts. rifles with barrels like this will not be suitable for use in any chassis/stock that uses an anchored oprod guide.

I would absolutely NOT shoot that rifle as it is, the condition shown in your video is and will cause dangerous and improper timing when fired and is potentially quite dangerous.

Your video. The last bit is where the bolt runs over the hammer plus my original oprod was binding just where the barrel bulges up by the chamber.

I replaced with Dlask oprod, problem solved.

lol, thanks. I'll call them later on today.

In the meantime, a few of my buddies have M305's. I'll compare my op rod with theirs. If that's what it is, I wonder if I have to send in the whole rifle for warranty or if I can just send the rod.

Thanks M14 kidd, PM sent.

Dlask just returned my email, they have one left. I'll call them after and see how much it is. I may just go that route to be safe.
