I have a relatively new M305, and just wondering if it is normal to have direct oprod/piston/gas plug contact. In other words, if the action is closed and I loosen the gas plug it will be under tension until it is threaded out a bit. Seems to indicate the threads on the gas plug are taking the force from the action operating, unless I'm missing something?

That is normal.

Usually the gas piston rests against the gas plug and acts as a "spacer" between the gas cylinder and the tip of the op-rod.

Some of the "more in depth" tuning methods involve turning down the gas plug or the piston to achieve "perfect" dwell time and or bolt roller clearance (in the op-rod bolt roller pocket).

Ideally you want 10-15 thou minimum clearance between the bolt roller and the rearmost portion of op-rod bolt roller pocket when the rifle is fully in battery and the bolt lugs are in contact with the receiver.....

I'm hoping my English language skills are doing this justice.....

Cheers!
