So I was going to make up some loads for my M305, but figured Id ask more then likely a few dumb questions before I went and did something dumber lol...

I'm going to load the 150 grain Hornady sp's, dont wanna go to heavy on bullet weight and I dont really have a need to. Now I just reloaded some of my 22-250 shells with CCI LR 200 primers and some varget. My question is can I use these primers and powder reliably in the M305? Ive tried searching and found various answers, both yes your good to go and no dont do it... Looking for some opinions on it. I know the M14's are kinda sensitive to heavy bullets and they need to right pressure to operate properly.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

first read this , some nice information to start with.

First don't use any powder burning slower than the IMR 4064. i found the Varget is to slow, but usable.
but This is not to say it’s necessary to use a “fast”powder.
Personally IMR 4895, Hodgdon 4895, Accurate Arms 2495 are, I think, the very best choices.
I have made experience with Accurate Arms 2520 as with the port pressures are appropriate for M1a and it was really appreciated by M1a service rifle group. This one provided me with the best results , But i have issue with consistency with it. each must be redeveloped with each new lot of Accurate Arms powder i was force to recalibrate my load. Darn near each keg came from a different powder manufacturer. Loads that were OK with one lot of Accurate Arms powder will blow primers with the next. Maybe thing have change since i stop using it.
As for the primer is use CCI BR-2 who are same as CCI LR-200 expect that you will have more consistent result with the br-2(due to they higher manufacture and QM quality). But you should be good with the Lr-200

as for you bullet choice , would it be for hunting(soft point) because if you start reloading for benchrest/paper punching it would use 155 a-max who have better ballistic Coefficient.
Is it worth it, t depend about you level of interest with this platform.
As for the basic, you will need to understand that with m1a they're many factor that will affect accuracy. If you think about reloading you should at least consider a unitizing the gas system, change the recoil spring with a usgi/wolf/springfield one(mine was off spec) and add a new spring guide rod(help with the smoothness of the action, and it supposed to help with accuracy but it's still questionable if you will see a huge difference)

if you have any other question ask.
regrads

I have found the best results to be with 168 HTBT & IMR 4895 or better yet IMR 8208 (an exceptional powder for the M1A)
CCI primers being nice and hard are a perfect fit for the free floating firing pin.

All sorts of loads will work, but you will find that a small node will really wake up the old girl and she will sing.

Good luck and have fun.

Okay guys thanks for the replies, Ive already done some work on my M305, not all that concerned with accuracy beyond 100-150 yards as its my bush gun for deer hunting. I've intstalled a new op rod spring guide and get consistent groups right now with regular Hornady 308 loads that ive bought. Thanks for the info! Will look into getting some of that other powder.

Varget works PERFECTLY well in the 308 and I have loaded thousands of rounds with 46 grains using Hornady 150 grain FMJ bullets and 155 grain Sierra 2155 bullets in the M14 clones I've had. I can't believe some of the stuff that gets written here some days.

Hmmmm... Lots of different opinions, I may try the varget just to see how it does saves buying more powder... Now how many guys crimp the case? Lots of different opinions on this I think to

you shall be good with that.

i use Redding S-Type bushing FL sizing die(with the good bushing size for the brass)
a Dillon case guage and a RCBS mic.
