Hi guys,

I have a question regarding the possible fit of a Krieger heavy pattern barrel (22 inches) on my M305 that is already in a Sage EBR chassis.
First, I know I'm not gonna transform that rifle into a bolt action type of accuracy... but I want to pimped it to the max! My rifle is a 2007 Norinco m305 with a 22 inches barrel. Here is a list of the upgrades I already did:
-Sage EBR chassis
-EBR Trigger and Hammer (awesome btw!)
-New op-rod, springs, and shimed gas block
-Hammerhead Muzzle brake.

With my handloads (hornady match 168 BTHP, H4895 41gr) I'm doing about 1,5 MOA but groups opened up +++ after about 10-15 shoots as soon as the barrel gets hot (which is really quick).

Here is a picture of my actual setting

Here is a typical target at 100y. The group close to the center is with my reload (first 5 shoots, cold barrel) and the group to the left is with Federal 149 gr rounds

Here are my questions for all the M305 gurus:
1) Do you think I could do better with a Krieger barrel?
2) If yes, what type of contour would be compatible with the Sage EBR chassis? I'm not sure the heavy pattern would fit.

Let me know what you guys are thinking

Thanks!

What kind of bbl do you have now? Chinese, or a match grade bbl in GI contour?

If you have a good quality barrel now, a fatter barrel will just heat up more slowly. It won't shoot any better while cold.

If it's a chinese chrome bore barrel, then yes, a new bbl should tighten groups a bit.

The answer is no, you cant put a heavy weight barrel in to that chassis. Only regular and medium weight barrels, unless you want to change to the one made for heavy weight barrels. I Recommend going with a quality medium weight barrel.

This is right off the Sage web sight.
M14ALCS - This EBR Tactical Aluminum Chassis Stock features a telescoping stock with an adjustable cheek rest. This model fits standard or medium weight barrels.
M14ALCS-HB - This EBR Tactical Aluminum Chassis Stock features a telescoping stock with an adjustable cheek rest. This model only fits heavy weight barrel guns.

Thanks, that's pretty much the conclusion I came to. I have read some post about guys that end up machining the external part of their heavy pattern barrel to make them fit... but that's a little too much for me.

You probably won't even be able to put a medium profile barrel in that chassis. It is an older model before the modifications to the design allowing the heavier barrel. If it has 5 cap screws holding the top piece of the fore end down it is standard/GI profile only. If it has 6 holding it down it can accept either the standard of medium profile barrels

o thanks for the information on that, there is a stock locally that iv been thinking about getting, im now going to have to see if its a 5 screw or 6 as i want to upgrade to a medium weight barrel later on.

I'm not sure about how to count the screws... I see 4 screws on each side and one screw in front. Here are some pictures. Let me know what you think. I have also measured roughly the space available in front.

Medium weight barrels fit just fine in the EBR.

You will also want to consider a new Gas System and a bolt IMHO, if you’re going to swap out that bbl for a Kreiger.

Smart words.

If you are installing a $1000+ chassis, why not splurge and get a decent quality gas system - treeline has them for reasonable money if you want GI. The SEI stuff, in my experience, is nice, but tough to justify the extra cost over good GI parts.

For bolts, the current "best buy" for a decent bolt (I buy bolts frequently, so keep on top of pricing) is to order an LRB bolt from @####. They recently took over LRB from Wolverine and the price on the bolts has therefore dropped considerably.

The Fulton GenII is also great, but almost $100 more than the LRB ones, which are just as good IMHO.

Decent GI bolts are getting tough to find and you often don't know how many other times it's been fitted to a receiver already. NOS GI bolts are all but gone now in Canada.

Thanks for your help guys,

Here is a list of what I've just ordered:
1 x Fulton Armory, barrel, 22", M14/M1A, Medium Contour, 1x10, Stainless, Match Quality, by Criterion
1 x Fulton Armory, Complete Bolt & Roller Assembly, Forged, FA - GEN II, fits M14 / M1A
1 x Fulton Armory, M14 Flash Suppressor, w/ Bayonet Lug, Includes Set Screw & Lock Nut
1 x Fulton Armory, Gas Cylinder Lock, Fits M1A/M14
1 x Fulton Armory, Gas Cylinder Plug, Adjustable, Schuster, fits M14 / M1A
1 x M14 M1A USGI Gas Cylinder
1 x M14 M1A Spindle Valve/Spring/Pin Bundle
1 x M14 M1A Gas System Shim Kit
1 x M14 M1A Sadlak NM Gas Piston TiN

So, finally, the only original part from my M305 will be the receiver...

That should cover it!! Jealous of this build!!
