I’m in the market for a M305 it’s been something I’ve always wanted and Ive held off since the MIM news came out.

And I was curious are there any differences between the shorty and the Socom? They’re the same length but with just different flash hiders from what I can see. Or if anyone has one or the other if they could share their thoughts on them?

Thanks

The socom flash hider is reversable. One side supposedly hides flash while the other way shrouds the barrel and nothing sticks out past the muzzle. Mine came loose a few times even with some blue loctite. Also the front sight is on the gaslock instead of the flash hider. In terms of hiding flash, my socom shot fireballs no matter which way I had the hider. The socom is nice if you want to avoid dealing with a welded flash hider like the regular norinco have, should you want to disassemble the gas system.

The shorty is just a standard m305 with a shorter barrel. Regular flash hider and front sight.

If you're thinking about a SOCOM get one :)
SA SOCOM16......love mine!

Thanks for the info, I’ll dig into it and hopefully I’m not disappointed. Who offers parts for these if I do need to get a new bolt?

Thanks
Jason

The EE is your best bet if you need another norinco bolt. Wolverine has some USGI parts but you have to email for specific parts.

Probably around $100 +/- for a complete forged norinco bolt. A usgi bolt is more. Closer to $300+. Headspace and lug contact will need to be checked either way before firing the rifle. A USGI bolt will require fitting.

My advice is to just try and get a good forged one so it isnt an issue. There are threads here on the MIM bolts and cast receivers that illustrate how to ID the bad ones. Also it appears if you stick with rifles assembled before 2013-14 you should be good. But in my experience asking for a date or picture of the bottom of the bolt through the magwell is a good way to get a seller to disappear and ignore you lol.

Just checked my bolt and it doesn’t have the 10 marks like the mim bolt. I really wanted a SOCOM 16 but shoot on my farm only so that doesn’t work haha. They are super nice.

Has there been any reports of the SOCOMs having MIM bolts?

I recently just saw that some stores started stocking them. Did a search and last time these were out was 2013?

I have both a Norinco M305 short and Dominion Arms Socom 18. Bought both back in2013 and both have been a lot of fun and both are huge money pits!! Lol. Not much Chinese left on either, most parts are USGI but that’s how it goes. Biggest thing is a good in spec receiver, rest can be easily fixed but if your receiver is out it could end up in the scrap heap.

Nothing to do with SOCOM as such but I have two Norinco M 305's that I cut down to 18.5 inches from the factory 22 inch. Surprising how much more fun they are to shoot. I haven't ever bothered to chrony them so I can't speak to any velocity loss but the holes continue to appear on the paper.

In other words get the shorty of your choice and have fun.

Glad to hear just picked up a shorty and glad I didn’t get a 22
Inch barrel!

Mim parts seem to have only started showing up in Norinco's in the last couple of years, while the Dominion arms Socom 18 was last available in 2013.
