M305 Sight dilemma

Hey guys new to this forum but was referred to it as apparently you guys are very informative on these rifles,
First off im from New Zealand so please advise if im speaking mumble haha..

Anyhow

I just brought a brand new Norinco M14 with the 18.5" barrel,
Got it out of the box and straight away noticed that the front sight is off,
By off I do not mean slid all the way to the right as I know these rifles are not sighted in at the factory - I mean that the front sight mount/flash dummy looks ROTATED to the LEFT :confused: I went back to the Firearms store and questioned them about it and was told "Thats rediculous! Your seeing things.. the flash suppressor is guided onto the barrel by a slot" so looking like a tool I leave the store back home to the rifle to get it out of the Safe to have another inspection... ITS STILL ROTATED!

I am really stumped on this, Is it possible the barrel was fitted to the receiver with the rotation? Its rotated roughly 5* Left, or is this just... normal?

Alot of the barrels need to be indexed, and some have the sight bases milled incorrectly so they appear to be at an angle.
If your sight base is not the problem it sounds like your barrel needs to be indexed.If the sight is leaning to the right while looking down the barrel while holding your rifle normally it is under tightened and if it is leaning to the left than the barrel is over tightened .

Check out the stickies on this...it is an easy fix . But the store should exchange it for one that is on straight as well.

And I am jealous of the fact you can buy 18.5 in versions from the factory :rockOn:, we have to chop the barrels and then rethread the muzzle after if we want a shorty m-305.
 
Yeah, the people's republic machinists have trouble milling flash hider sight dovetails that are perpendicular to the barrel index.

I've had the same problem on mine, swapped it for an aftermarket M1A flash hider and was good to go.

Before checking for out of index issues please ensure that the spline ways are cut corretly and most importantly check to ensure that the middle line cut in the rear sight is in the dead center. Most people chuck these garbage sights and get new ones as they suck most of the time.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, I sent it in to the gunsmith under warrenty, I believe it is indexed incorrectly as the piston that throws the OpRod backwards doesnt hit it in the center its off to the side... and I guess because I wasnt actually paying for the work to be done the cheap sods milled the slots on the barrel wider so they could just rotate the flash suppressor around more...

Just another thing, I decided to mount a scope onto the rifle - Took it out to my backyard range to sight it in - Fired the 1st round and the reticle rotated clockwise bout a quarter turn, thought the scope was loose but no it was still square and fired another round and it rotated almost another quarter turn, in the scopes defence it was a cheap scope that someone sold me (Unbranded chinese scope haha), Im a little hesitant on going out and buying something worthy incase this happens again, Any advice?

Thank you :) we have very relaxed laws on firearms here in New Zealand, I love the 18.5" version it looks very tidy, just could do with the parts you guys seem to have an abundance of!!

Darn... I was just on both North and South Islands visiting Middle Earth this past July! :eek: I shoulda visited ya and inspected your indexing situation. Trust me, it's a 5 minute fix to sort out the indexing. Chalkriver and I tweaked his indexing situation. It took more time to clamp things up at the Barrie, ON clinic back in July 2010 than it did to lean on the wrench and turn that barrel/receiver to top dead center! :D

Once you scope that rifle with good optics, you won't even care about the indexing situation. Just get yourself some good glass! Buy the best mount you can afford because some of the cheaper mounts are just THAT.... CHEAP! Save yourself the Advils and buy once; cry once! :evil:

Thanks for the reply sorry its been a while been busy with Holidays and what not,
That doesnt sound too hard at all really, but since I have been using Glass alot more recently I think I may not bother and just look into buying something decent,

Haha how was Middle Earth for you? Its a beautiful place to take the "killing stick" for a stroll and occasionally let the thing do what it does best and come out with some Venison,

Short of the aggravation of having to look at your off kilter front sight, once you dial it in, it's good to go (providing you can dial it in). Lots of variations within this field. I have 2 and both sights are drifted right and to get to a hundred yard zero from the bottom , one is 8 clicks and one is 17! But they sure shoot well. Best(type) sights in the world.
