OK, I know I am a glutton for punishment, but I am at a loss on this one. My ancient Nork M-14 wanna-be (so ancient it has the all blued receiver and barrel) that has been through Hungry's rescue program (twice!) - yet still cant shoot at 125 yards!

I set up at 25 yards to sight in - I replaced the Nork sights with $90 M1 rear sights and she still shoots worse than any of my SKS's!!!

At 25 yards, I am hitting the bull with my rear sight set for 500 yards...so I up it to 600 yards and I am hitting 1-2 inches above the bull. Then I move to the 125 yards stall, and I am nowhere on paper even??? I set the battle sights to flat and I am hitting 50 yards IN FRONT of the back stop!

I try at 600 and eventually on 800 yards rear sight setting to get on paper - groups are spectacular (when I can get them on paper!) WTF am I doing wrong? DO I have to change the front sight too?

Using SA surplus .308 FMJ 150 grain boat tail.

any suggestions from the gurus???

If you are in the bull at 25 you would be in the bull at 100. Right?

Maybe not. If you are shooting at a round bull with a 6 oclock hold at 25 yards, you are setting the sights to be about 4 inches above POA. That is 16 minites high.

You want to set sights at 25 to group at the POA (at 6 oclock, not in the middle). Slip the sight drum to read 100 then shift to 100 yards. It should hit at about POA. Re-slip the sight drum when it is hitting POA (not hitting the middle of the round bull, but hitting where you are aiming, probably at 6 o'clock).

Okay... a good opportunity to learn here.

At 100m, how many kliks from absolute bottom is your rear aperture? Let's start there. If you don't know (at this point) we need to find out because we will be wasting our time (and ammo).

Get back to us!

Today I couldn't hit a 4x4 foot target at 25 yards with my iron sights. After a few shots I realized it was because my flash hider was crooked and the bullets were hitting it.

check the inside of your hider to see if you're getting any bullet on flash hider action, the kind that shouldn't be legal, but we allow it because love is all you need even if you're flying 2750 fps and about to explode in a deer's face.

EDIT: 2750 at the muzzle, less if the deer is farther away.

Guys, let's consider exactly what he said. I think the problem is clear from the explanation.

"At 25 yards, I am hitting the bull.....so I up it to 600 yards and I am hitting 1-2 inches above the bull."

Assuming he was taking a 6 o’clock hold on the 25 yd bull, the rifle was zeroed about 16 minutes above Point of Aim at 100 yards. He then raised the sights another 6 minutes (500 to 600). When he shot at 100 yards, the rifle was set about 22 minutes high (almost 2 feet!).

He might not be on paper.

FishDoc can you set your sight to 100 yards, and then go down another 10 clicks? That should give you hits at 100 yards close to where you are aiming.

The rifle should be zeroed at some distance (100 to 500 yards) so that it is hitting at the same point you are aiming (bottom of the black - not the middle.) Once the drum is set to that distance, you can dial in any distance you want - and then come up a few clicks (minutes) to move from POA to the middle of the bull.

What you cannot do is zero the rifle to hit the middle of the bull at each distance using the drum settings. I think this is what you tried to do.

Been there. Done that. Did not work for me, either.

Thanks all for the replies - I took apart the sight again and made sure it was put together right the first time. The left side screw was a little loose and also the "zero" line was not at zero. I have put it back together again and will try it out next thursday. I will post pics and range report.
Thanks again - this is definitely a learning point!

I remember writing a sticky for this somewhere;)

Here's the short n sweet version.

1-Bottom out rear sight.
2-Center rear sight.
3-Come up 6-8 clicks.
4-Shoot at 25m
5-Adjust front sight L or R for windage until dead center.
6-Shoot at 100m
7-Adjust Elev up or down until dead on REMEMBER THE CLICKS UP FROM BOTTOM it is your zero.
8-Hold rear aperture FIRMLY so it wont slip, loosen sight screw and set Elev pinion to the 100m mark, tighten screw.
9-Crank Elev all the way down counting the clicks to make sure its still the same number as in step 7.
10-Tighten screw some more and come up from bottom to your 100m zero.
11-Fire a group to confirm zero.
12-If you have more than one M14, write the zero behind the rear sling swivel so you wont forget.

Also I don't rely on the Elev pinion. I know how many clicks I need to add on top of the riifles 100m zero for 200, 300, 400, ect

Well - I took J996 advice to a tee... and IT WORKS! My sights were off when I put the M1 sights together. So after doing the re-zero job - it works PERFECTLY! (at 25 yards)
I didnt get to shoot at 125 since I got called in to the ER stat (Friggin work gets in the way of fun too much!)
Range report next week (I hope!)
