M305 upgrades - scopes and mounts

I just got the chance to shoot my M305 shorty for the first time :D I took it apart and the indexing is good, the stock seems to fit well. I was quite happy with the way it shoots... very co fordable gun. I thought I would go with the open sights for this gun, but my vision isn't as good as I thought. I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 on my hunting rifle, and I need optics to match the gun for that the bolt action, so I am left with the Bushnell to put on my M305. I have heard good reviews about the ARMS 18 scope mount. Does anyone have experience with the Bushnell and the ARMS combo. I would still like to be able to use the open sights, which is why I'm looking at the ARMS mount... is this scope too big. Would you need or recommend a cheeckplate? I want to slowly build this gun into a decent shooter, and want to start with optics... what would be your next recommendation for accurizing with the biggest bang for your buck. This is my first project gun so pardon my ignorance, but I really like this gun after the first time at the range and want to have even more fun with it :D:D:D
 
If you can't find a ProMag mount, the Arms are available from Wolverine Supplies.

Bushnell 10x40 is what I chose (it has fully multicoated optics like the rest of the 4200 Elites), but the Redfield Revolution is also good and in the same price range.

Arms 18 + Bushnell Elite 10x40 + Leupold low rings (there's still room, so you might be able to get even lower rings)

Congrats on getting a shorty , I really like mine.
Lots of info and help on here , copy stickies and posts and you will learn alot.

I went a different route with my shorty but on a Polytech I own.
I went with a harris 9-13 swivel base with notched legs bipod with locking lever.
Yankeehill bipod adapter,SA muzzle brake, rauch op rod spring guide .

I have the Arms 18 (good mount) millet angle loc rings and upgraded from my Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 to a redfield revolution 4-12x40 . I feel it is a better scope , more clear and a great bargain.
I found the 3200 was still a good scope though and it will stand up to the vibrations fine.So I say use it and if you want upgrade later ..

The arms mount has a screw on the front that you should swap out for one with an allen head ,otherwise you will have to put a notch in your forestock :eek:

If you want to still use the iron sights , arms 22 removable mounts are a good way to go.

A cheek piece is a good idea as well .
For accurizing , start with a better op rod spring guide . Is the op rod guide loose on the barrell ? Does the gas lock get nice and tight at the 6:00 position?

Oh ya shoot it lots and get into reloading $$....these are a good rifle and working on them is half the fun.

Thanks fo rthe info... since I'm stuck with the Bushnell Elite 3200, I'm happy that I can still use the iron sights with the ARMS mount. I would like to attend the clinic, but I'm not sure if I am in town when Hungry is scheduled to come here. The gas lock is nice and tight at 6 oclock. I'm thinking of upgrading the op rod spring guide... I sure hope I can make it to the clinic, although I know it will cost me $$$$ because I just can't say no to upgrades :)
 
Hello JD , I like the stock on mine , the adjustments make it more comfortable .
Nice cheap upgrade for a range gun ...as for hunting , not so good in my opinion.
Thats why I have 2 ...lol
It isnt a precision shooting stock by any means, but I shoot better as its more comfortable and it looks cool ..lol

First step is to cut a groove on the right side of the stock.

This is becuase the Chinese receivers are shaped different on the bottom of the receiver.

The heel of the receiver must sit flush with the stock at the back and sides with no gap.

A little material may have to be removed from under the trigger pad area.

Install the trigger group and there should be a little resistance when closing the trigger guard
Do the ( after trigger assembly test ) and if it fails and it is flush under the receiver areas remove some more material a little at a time evenly from the trigger pads. Then do the trigger test again until it passes the test.

And Your Done !

It sounds complicated but it isnt too hard really , :)

Got a chance to take it out over the long weekend. Really like the stock, especially the click adjustable cheek piece. Monkeying around with some jams to do with the mount now.
 
If rounds keep jamming cutting a couple coils off of the 2 springs (ejector and extractor) in the bolt should cure the problem.
 
Yeah, I did that, but it still jammed. I think it's because my forward ring is poorly placed, so I moved it back.

I am using Millett angle locs (low) and have them mounted like this...no ejection issues.

Did you take 2 coils off each spring ? , as M-14 Doc advised removing up to 3 coils max on the ejector spring .

2 coils on extractor, 3 on ejector. It definitely happened more often with some ammo than with others, so I'm going to see if it happens more often with my reload of choice (TBD). If that doesn't resolve it, I'll go to USGI springs or work on it at one of the Calgary clinics.

Well, you can’t still use your iron sights with an arms mount unless you use detachable scope mounts and keep taking your scope on and off, but you can with a Sadlak Industries M14 mount.
The Sadlak mount has a U-shaped channel thru the rail that provides an opening under the rings to use the iron sights with the scope and rings attached, you also will not have any ejection issues that require trimming coils off springs.
