Hey all !
I am currently in the market for a Nork M-14/305 or a CZ858. However, cool factor put aside I am wondering which would be the most accurate and precise rifle ? Also will they both fire everytime I pull the trigger?( I need a rifle that won't let me down )

.38spl versus .357magnum ;)

Ammunition for one is going to be a lot more than the other - use that for your criteria then make your decision.

Both will be accurate enough; the M305 can be tricked out more so than the 858; bith will go bang everytime.

thanks, I will keep the cost down with any of the twos as I am jumping into the reloading game next month. However what do you mean by accurate enough? I am looking for 1-2 inch groups at 100yrds.

I don't know that many people who reload 7.62x39 because the corrosive stuff is plentiful and cheap (although these days it is getting harder to find) so .308 would be best for reloading IMO. The more accurate rifle will be the M305, and if you throw a few upgrades external and internal it will be a tack driver so to speak.

CZ858 is a fun plinker, but if your going for accuracy (are you using irons or a scope?) I'd go with a M305.

Since you're reloading, I would think that both will shoot 1-2" at 100yrds easily - I don't own either, but reputations for both are good (I've shot the 858 at 100m and was pleased with the accuracy; little larger than 2" but that was surplus ammo and me shooting :D).

I concur though, the M305 would be the more serious rifle for accuracy, etc.

Actually I used corrosive ammo in my 100$ SKS, but I don't plan on it in a 800$ gun, also the scope vs. iron is my greatest dilem right now... Both are very nice looking, but I find a scope will ruin the look of the CZ and if I drop a scope on the M14 I will change stock, upgrade internals, install bipod, etc etc... and my 500$ deer rifle will become a 2000$ range whore...

My 858 is pretty accurate. I would imagine out of the box with simular sights they will be pretty much the same. Many people are getting 2" groups with their 858s. I haven't handled an m-14 but I think the 858 is quite a bit lighter. You can is make an m305 very accurate but that isnt' out of the box or cheap.

i have both and the m-305 is def more heavy duty the cz-858 is way lighter and its pretty cool looking with a scout mount and folding stock if i were u i would buy both well u can lol

I LOVE my CZ-858, it is simple, light, extremely rugged, good looking and terribly fun to shoot! You will not regret buying one, if that is what you choose.

Just a note on ammo: The CZ is designed to run on Milsurp ammo, in fact most people report it runs *better* on steel case milsurp. Brass cases and SP bullets are known to cause problems in many CZ's. If you do get a CZ make sure you test it with the ammo you are going to run before you take it out to the bush (true with any firearm that could be called on to save your life.)

Remember that the bulk of the corrosive 7.62x39mm in Canada right now is from the same place as the CZ-858, they go together like PB&J!

Tough call really. I have both a M14S and a VZ-58S. If you made me pick between the two, I'd probably take the VZ-58S, only because it's more fun to shoot, and it's a bit cheaper. Both rifles are plenty accurate, but I wouldn't say either rifle is terribly precise. Remeber both these rifles are "battle rifles", not precision rifles or modern carbines. With surplus ammo, you can expect about 2-3" groups at 100 yards with both rifles. I haven't shot commercial ammo out of my VZ58, but in my M14 I can get 1" at 100 yards consistently.

I think the big question you need to ask yourself is: what are you planning on using the rifle for? If you want to hunt with it, I'd get an M14, if you just want a cool looking gun to pop off in the back 40, get the CZ858.

I have an unimproved M305 the only change was the addition of an ARMS#18 mount and a scope. It shoots quite well at 100 meters right around one inch with Surplus South African ammo, the Norinco stuff is a bit looser, but not bad. You don't need to change your stock, spend $30 odd on an Eagle industries butt pack or do what I did and pad it yourself. I have an old pad of a shooting rest that I put on with hockey tapr and 100mph tape to waterproof it, works perfectly. The arms#18 is a nice mount, but you don't have to go that route, I've seen guys running the cheaper ones with little problem. so you should be under $1000 even witha decent optic!
IMO
:D

tnx for the comments guys !! keep em comming !! actually getting both is my goal but you gotta start somewhere !!! just one noob question : steel cases can't be reloaded right??? or could I just take off the FMJ bullet and place a hunting bullet on top ???

I guess you could but you are talking about using inconsistant powders and primers etc. like I said ingman copper soft points went through my rifle no problem at all.
