M37 and Mk 21
Mk 21 in Vietnam
The M37 coaxial machine gun has the ability to feed an ammunition
belt from either the left or the right of the weapon, and has an extended
charging handle similar to those on the M1919A4E1 and A5. A trial
variant fitted with special sighting equipment was designated M37F,
while a variant with spade grips, the T152, was also developed but not
adopted. A variant designed for remote firing via a solenoid trigger for
use in the XM1/E1 armament subsystem was designated M37C. A
version of the M37, rechambered in 7.62x51 mm NATO is rumored to
have been created, though no examples have been found.
There was
also a U.S. Navy variant of M1919A4 rechambered in 7.62 mm NATO
caliber which was designated as the Mk 21 Mod 0.

The MK-21 was a 'variant' of the M-37 that was modified specifically so that the gun could use the M-13 push-through links, vice the standard Browning M-1 or M-1A1 pull-out links (or belts).

These were the same links used by the M-60, (I think still in use today with the C-6 and other 7.62 MMG's)

I'm made to understand that there were significant changes made to the feed/extract mechanism, including possibly an extra part silver-soldered to the topcover.

In order to make the M-1919A4 in caliber .30 into the Mk 21 Mod 0 in 7.62mm NATO, Naval Ordnance Station Louisville had to:
· Install a 6-inch flash suppressor on the end of the muzzle bearing at the end of the barrel jacket.
· Replace the .30 barrel with a 7.62mm barrel.
· Modify the bolt and feed cover to feed the 7.62mm ammunition.
· Add a second belt holding pawl to position the belted 7.62mm ammunition.
· Add a spacer block in the feedway to help guide the shorter 7.62mm ammunition and act as a round stop to prevent the use of caliber .30 ammunition.
· Stamp the receiver sideplate with the markings: "Machine Gun, 7.62mm, Mk 21 Mod 0."

Hope this helps.

Are parts available to convert these to 308?

are those parts available from somewhere or did that guy do a custom on off?

looking for something plug and play so I can put it back to original for future sale/retain value

i have a feeling its not something thats on the market (i cant find any). those two black chunks of metal look simple enough to reproduce, are removeable and do not affect its original design.
the rest of the parts can be imported if not available here in canada. im guessing the links will have to be seated differently on 308 so not to interfere with the feed pawl arm. but just a guess.

Edit: here's the feed pawl assembly mod. so the links work properly. i also have a few more pictures of the cartridge stops if anyone is interested.

I talked to P&D about the m37 and they are all sold out already. I just have to wait for the mods to grant me access to the equipment exchange so I can place a "wanted" add for a 1919
