M38

I now retract recommending Xtreme shooting center.

I bought an M38 and all was fine with that sale.

Today I had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting the owner.

Snide, condescending, and full of hot air. He also lied to my face and tried to knowingly sell me a gun that was previously returned for being damaged. Mechanically, not cosmetically.

I've spent my last dollar there.

after seeing your post I considered them just because of their lower price, but I emailed to inquire about a few details and when he responded that he "didn't think" they were counterbored, I lost confidence.

I placed an order with Corwin Arms this afternoon

Yes the Mosin bolt head is removable unlike most others. But it would indeed be a rare bird to have a numbers matching and a mismatched bolt head on a cosmoline soaked refurbed milsurp. Buying from someone second hand more likely, but if buying a refurb milsurp in cosmoline from a dealer highly unlikely to be a problem.

Exactly right. In cosmoline is the way to go - these rifles were inspected and gauged before they were put into storage. Perhaps the only exception is the "Collectors Source $199 M44s". These seem to have been tossed in cosmoline without any inspection. Not complaining; I got several and they were well worth the money.
Headspace problems with Mosins are like slam fires in SKSs - extremely rare, but an opportunity to sell gauges and "improved" firing pins.

Stay below $400. Most, if not all M38s you come across will have M44 stocks. Not a big deal. Both of mine do. Unless your collecting, don't give it a second thought. Original all matching number and stock M38 will go for a premium, $400+. But only from a private seller, dealers would likey sell it for the same price as the rest of their M38s. Bore is important, but also request a matching bolt, it will ensure the likelyhood of correct headspaceing.

So what's the difference between a 38 and a 44 stock?

Went and checked my Polack M 44. No grove, stock has normal profile.

Not too familiar with the polish models. Did they produce a M38? Maybe your 44 is in a Polish 38 stock? Or maybe the Polaks didn't incorporate a groove in their version of the design.

With the russian 38, the bayo groove can vary in depth and appearance. One of mine has a prominent groove, while the my other one has a less significant groove cut out.
