M38

I love the mosin carbines. I find them to be much more desirable and satisfying to acquire. (probably why I own 4 of em! Lol)

Finally got her back together.

Bluing has to be touched up and the bolt has only been partially polished.

Given that I found it in a cement cellar underground I am pretty happy how it turned out.

Good work!,

Is it just me though or does it look like someone took a m44 and lobbed off the bayo mount on the barrel? I see a ground and smoothed square knob right where it would normally be.

Regardless, it's a "m38" now I guess.

I had to post the old pictures, please beware, these are not pretty. And yes, that is mold and fungus you see in the pictures. The Barrel was completely blocked with it.

I think your right, I did not figure it out until after. The bore looked way to good (despite the fungal infection) to be a M38. The year supports this as well I guess.

As for finding it in a cellar, two years in a row. Picked up a nice shooting 1915 Ross Rifle two years ago buried in a old basement. Hoping for a SVT next year, lol.

A better shot of the barrel lug or lack thereof

And a few more Glamour shots!

Bayonet and mounting assemblies can be found online if you wanted to get your m44 back to the way it should look. Love the project. Looks good!

Liberty Tree has the bayonet mounting lug and pins to install it for 18 bucks. Looks like the bayonets are sold out though.

Posting on EE for 2x the original value.....so .50cents it can be yours with money left over to buy A535 for the rope burn!

All kidding aside, thanks from another milsurp guy for doing a great restoration on an old, forgotten rifle. If you don't mind me asking, what did Liberty Tree charge for shipping? I contacted them last year as I wanted to check out a few items while I was in the states and they quite bluntly said they were mail order only.

I dug up the invoice.

$12 for 3 items. The barrel bands, hand guard and the follower. Not bad considering. I wanted a few more items but they would not ship them across the border. Thankfully some folks on here were pretty helpful when they seen what I was up against. A few PM's after the initial post asking what I needed.

Follower was weak and when the bolt would pick up the round it would shear off the tip of the projectile. I think this is the reason it was shelved, or in this case, cellared, lol. Range next week. I will post pics.

$12 isn't bad at all. I had two rear sights sent from Alberta to NS last week. The package was small and weighed .123kg. Shipping through Can Post was $15.22.

I hope the rifle serves you well. Good luck and happy shooting.
