M39 at thegundealer..

Should I have to pay return postage on a rifle that is unsafe? Just wondering.

I wouldn't say it is unsafe with a ring and worn bore. When buying used guns from a lot of dealers, you really need to ask a lot of questions...they may not have even looked at the bore or under the wood etc and graded it VG. A few select dealers like Tradex and P&S Militaria that deal in mulsurps are much more reliable in their grading. You should have asked if they will cover return shipping when you contacted them for the return.

If it was rated as "very good" then my opinion would be you shouldn't have to pay postage. Just my 2 cents!!

It's on its way back on my dime right now. I will ask them when it gets there and see what they say. There is a big gap between very good and unsafe to use, in my opinion. Maybe I am wrong on my assessment, but to me a rifle with a ringed barrel is not safe/reliable.

Well, they didn't really give me a chance. He said if its no good send it back. goodbye. I never really had a chance. I have dealt with them before and when asking about condition he told me to read their condition policies on the website. Maybe my last purchase there. On a side note a rifle I bought as fair with a very good bore from Epps was exactly that.

If they offered it at a reduced price I would take it & have it counter bored. I had a k98 with the same problem in the same place & it shot much better after a counter bore.

From my experience, I have about three WW1 rifles that have rings in their bores. Two of the three (a 1916 SMLE and a Mosin M1891) shot quite fine. The third is a Gewehr 98 that I haven't tried yet due to weather.

I do hand load for all my rifles so the pressures are just above minimums.

Was the bore imperfection mentioned in the ad when you bought the M39 ?

No it was listed as very good. It was the worse bore I have ever seen.

That's a shame :(. I have not bought from "thegundealer" before but I have had great results with Ellwood Epps. One rifle I bought from them had a ring in the bore and it was identified on the Epps hang tag in bold lettering so you couldn't miss it.

EDIT* They would only refund the price of the rifle. None of the shipping costs either way. I am out 90 bucks. Also the rifle has since re-sold. Sad. :(
