Hello

I just bought a new M39 from and P&S. It is a thing of beauty and I am happy to have it. I have two questions.

1. What is a good commercial ammunition for this rifle
2. What diameter bullet should I reload for this cartridge?

Thanks

You can find some Igman reloadable ammo at Districorp. Prvy Partizan, when found is very good brass, too.
If I recall well, M-39s had a .310" bore and they take very well Hornady's 174gr. FMJBT #3131 which are .3105".
PP.

M39

It is Finish, made in 1941. It is truely a thing of beauty.

I do not know how it shoots, as I just got it in the mail from P&S.

M39

I got the one and only example from P&S.

There are some at Collector's Source, I think. I have not seen the pictures. But the example I got from P&S is superb. It was sold as VG, but should be listed as excellent. The wood is very nice, the metal has original finish, though some areas are slightly worn. The barrel is nice too. The best thing is the ergonomics. It feels very good at the shoulder, slightly muzzle heavy and very comfortable. It is suppose to shoot 1.3 inch groups, which I believe is likely true, after examining the workmanship.

Some remanufactured Finnish m/n apparently had .308 bores but most had .310 bores. If you can find any Lapua 7.62 (.310) fmj bullets they are fabulous.

You should slug your bore to be sure what you have. If you have a .308 bore you will have lots more bullet choices but you will probably want a .308 neck expander in your resizing die or .308 bullets may not be held tightly enough in the case neck.

ALL M39's built on real M39 barrels are .310", or at least they were designed to be, manufacturing tolerances will cause this to vary slightly. If you encounter one with a tighter bore, you might have a remanufctured M28 or M28/30 - thogh this is rather unlikely as most guns later remanufactured to M39 standard were the older M91's.

Sellier & Bellot makes a good 180 grain hunting round that shoots to POA out of my Finn M28 and russkie M44. Good stuff! Not the easiest to find, mind you...

Igman and S&B are the best commercial we currently have. It pisses me off, but Winchester makes 54R and only sells it in the USA. None has come to Canada (yet).

Can you hear me Marstar???

The Winchester stuff is made by S&B, so in effect, the Winchester has been here for a while...

I e-mailed Winchester a few years ago to see when their 7.64x54 would be here and they said "not in the foreseeable future".They also verified that it was made by S&B under contract. Unless you NEED the Winchester headstamp, S&B would be the logical choice.

huh! I didn't know that! If only we could get commercial Norinco and Wolf ammo here we'd be all set. Both are far better than 1960's east block and balkan surplus ;)

ohhh that wolf ammo is good stuff. A little shy of 10 bucks a box down south, I'd happily buy that over the corrosive surplus we currently get, for both the ease of cleaning and the reloadable brass.
