M4 Feed ramps.

I have an HBAR Upper on a standard lower. I'm beginning to dislike the slop between the upper and lower...before anyone start going on about it being irrelevant, do you have this combo? It works, but I swear I could shoot around corners with the thing. Yes I can make it shoot, but the amount of side to side slop can't be good for the life of the components. The solution is obvious get a stripped upper and transfer the parts, but my barrel extension has Rifle feed ramps. Is changing the barrel extension simple, or is it just better to spend the extra $$$ get a "rifle" upper?

The STI looks like the best option, priced right but there's no details about material etc.

While it is hypothetically possible to change a barrel extension, it is a significant amount of work for someone who knows exactly what they are doing and ultimately will cost more than buying a new barrel.....if it happens to turn out properly (which unless you know exactly what you're doing, it won't).


Ultimately, you should just buy yourself a new rifle upper and then you will be issue free.

Or, you could try cutting yourself some shims to take up the slop....if it works it's a pretty cheap 'solution'.

I figured it wasn't simple...it's about the only AR part I couldn't find. I'd considered "shimming" it, but I didn't think I had any material thin enough. I literally just remembered I have an empty beer can, I think that's where I'll start, followed by an STI stripped Receiver in a month or two.

Brownells sells barrel extensions......but you'd also need a barrel vise, BE socket, go/no-go gauge, possibly a chamber reamer, a lathe.etc etc etc

Well, non-existent problem solved, but you'll feel better. Seriously you're over-thinking this. Just buy a new complete upper if it bothers you that much.

Correct, I love how everyone loves to say non-existing problem. Unless you've owned or held an HBAR upper bushed to fit a standard lower I'm betting you aren't really aware of how much play there is. A flat top upper will also sort out the other problem of mounting a scope. As for a new complete upper...I guess I could try gofundme.

Before you buy a new upper, you should check to see whether the extra slop is in the upper or lower. If the lower is what's loose, you'll be in the same position you are in now.
