I had a nice matching one a few years back and I posted on some of the militaria sites trying to find info. Clive Law told me that apparently, when Canadair went to produce the Canadian F86 Sabres, the US drawings included ancillery equipment as well. The M-4 was part of the aircraft survivial gear, and was stowed behing the ejection seat.
Of the half dozen that I have seen, the highest serial number was in the 1500 range. I have also seen an RCAF marked pouch for the gun which included a couple of extra mags.
Although it is a bolt action, it is still restricted because of the short overall length. I have seen some guys try and overcome this be welding in an extra brace on the collapsible stock, but the CFC FRT disc I have only shows them as restricted.
In the US, they are quite valuable. If properly registered (as a short barrel rifle) then they go for about $1500. Here in Canada, they are more of a novelty. I have seen them go for anywhere from $175, up to around $650.
They exhibit the C/l\ mark on them, although technically that marking was retired before these would have been made.
Numrich has a parts listing for them, in case anyone is looking for bits and pieces. There was a decent one at the Regina show last month, but the seller and myself couldn't come to agreement. Besides, I spent all my available money on other treasures.
