Thanks

I'd go with the M91 1891/30.

I've found the M44 to be extremely accurate with 174 hornday bullets at 100 yds but at 200 yds the same reloads gave me an 18 inch bullet drop and a wandering point of impact.

My M91 on the other hand is accurate at both distances and has a consistant point of impact.

Awsome feedback, thanks!! I'll be using commerical grade ammo ( S&B 180gr ) from SFRC until the milsurp is available from CGN vendors ( I keep reading late August ?? )

Buy them both, they're cheap enough. I have 2 m44's and an m91, both shoot great. The m44 is a leaping, roaring, fire breathing cannon, similar to the mauser carbine or no5 mk1 ("jungle carbine") Too much fun to not own- throw a slip-on recoil pad on it and giver. The m91 is more accurate at longer ranges and the recoil is more like a no4 Lee Enfield.

If it's one or the other, get the 91/30; it's at least long enough to have a decent sighting radius for accuracy.

If you can afford two, get them both.

If you can afford three......

......ah, but this is a Free Country. You can't do that!

the 91/30 seems to balance better for me. i'm partial to the pre-WWII dated ones with the hex reciever.

I've got an M44. Bought it from Trade-Ex. It was in great shape. It's ugly, crude, loud, kicks like a bastard, bolt manipulation occasionally involves a good hard whack, it shoots off to the left unless the bayonet's extended, and it is not exactly accurate (although I've only shot S&B commercial through it and haven't started reloading for it yet).

It's a heck of a lot of fun and I'm happy with it. I'd say buy both.

It appears as though all known stocks of M44 carbines in Eastern Europe have been emptied and that their availablity from dealers will likely dry up sooner. I had a Polish example, Russian Laminate and decided to purchase another before Tradeex ran out a few months ago. I haven't tried mine yet, but greatly enjoyed shooting my M38 carbine. Shooting from a bench I was able to keep hitting the target at 200 yards but with the issue sights it wasn't exactly grouping for me, just hitting the target. I noticed afterwards that a stock screw was loose though, and was distracted by hard extraction, aka Mosin sticky bolt.

I've fired both my M91/30 and 91/30 Sniper repro at 100 yards. The 91/30 with Czech ammo shot reasonably well, was not too bad on recoil (though I eventually began to feel it) and felt well balanced in hand. It felt as though the longer sight radius made it easier to shoot accurately. The rifle would have a bit been wieldy to carry in the bush though fine for stand hunting.

The Sniper repro that I recently purchased was very soft on the shoulder with SP S&B ammo. I basically just got to sight her in and can't judge the rifle on the basis of that alone, but am happy so far. The trigger pull felt like it was squishing down on 50 year old cosmoline, so in retrospect you may want to check that before getting to the range with your Mosin and cleaning out the trigger mechanism if required.

Both are good buys. The rifle is probably a tad better for the range, the carbine will be harder to get in the future though and handier in the bush. It depends on what features you'd prefer.

Regards,

Frank
