M44/M38 Muzzle Blast and recoil - WOW

I tired one of those bolt on muzzle breaks today. It worked, but before long it was loose and even bent the screws. That will be going in the garbage. I shot an awesome little cast load of 10 grains of Unique, 180 grain cast GC boolit. Go a decent group at 50 yards and it was a lot of fun to shoot. My bullets were .309 but I got a .311 and .312 sizer on order. I am sure the larger bullet will even be better for accuracy.

Anybody have a 7.62x54 jacket bullet load with fast burning powders????????????????????

Thanks

Does anyone know the recoil weight of the 7.62X54mm? I heard somewhere that the MkVII .303 ball ammo produces something like 40lbs of realized recoil force to the shooter of an Enfield. For this reason I don't own (have shot, but don't own) a No5 Mk1. I've been contemplating an M44, but all bets are off if its a shoulder crusher.

I do shoot .303 from a No1Mk3 and a No4Mk2 comfortably.

I find the m44 with Hungarian heavy ball, and the no5mk1 with 180 sp about the same, recoil wise. Either one is fine for a few rounds, but if you plan on benchrest firing a box or two, get a pad. The rubber recoil intensifier on the no5mk1 makes it a little more painfull. Mind you, if your carrying an extra 100lbs or so, I'm sure it feels like nothing. I love them both though, lot's of fun to shoot. Pick up both Plinker, they are sweet!

Finally got to shoot my M44 yesterday and it was a blast. Don't find it kicks any more than a 91/30 but does have a crazy big muzzle flash due to the shorter barrel and same slow powder. Gonna have to whip up a batch of reloads just for this girl.

The reason for the flame blast is that the ammo was designed for the full length barrel where it would burn all the powder whereas the carbines shorter barrel doesn't burn it all off. I love the blast when it gets darker, great light show. And I do have to say that all the people at the range do look your way when you start shooting wondering what the hell it is, lol !

I have received many comments about "What canon are you shooting" at my club range.
The concussion can be felt well out into the parking lot.

As for a recoil pad, I found the slip on ones - slip. I found this solution and it works extremely well.

Buy a spare butt plate. Clean and roughen the surface. Get a black flip flop (or other colour of your chosing).
Epoxy the flip flop to the butt plate (less straps of course). Trim flip flop to the shape of the plate.

I then filled in the top radius between plate and pad with high strength epoxy to fill in the gap, sanded and painted with crappy tire undercoating. It is amazing how 1/2" of high density foam can reduce the felt recoil.
