M44 or 1891/30?

Hey, I'm having a tough time choosing which mosin nagant rifle I want. I'm looking for a little advice to steer me one dircetion or the other. The places I'm thinking of buying from are Trade Ex Canada or Frontier Firearms.
 
One of the main questions you have to ask is what you are going to use it for. An m44 may be a bit more handy in the woods, but for range shooting I'd go with the 91/30. Ive owned both and I much preferred my 91/30.
 
I'm going to be using it for hunting but also target shooting aswell. Another question, is there lots of milsurp ammo around as well as comercial hunting loads?

In that case get the M44 and buy a lee handloader.
 
Even though the 91/30 would be a bit more cumbersome for hunting, it would more than make up for that at the range. I would get a 91/30 if I had to buy just one. Commercial hunting loads are available, such as PRVI Partisan, but as SKScanuck said, you should get into reloading if you plan to shoot it. This way, you can make your own hunting loads and load FMJ rounds for the range at a reasonable price. Surplus is still out there, but its drying up really quick.

Not if you hold it right.

Many times I've shot 50-100 rounds out of my M44s or M38s in one session. Sure, you know you've been shooting the next day, but it's not bad.
 
The recoil isnt something im too worried about, as far as the hand loading goes I just dont have the space to do it :(. I'm also afraid im gonna blow my self up lol!

Gun shows, small shops, asking your buddies and the EE should get you some ammo. I just scored 480 rounds of Czech light ball for $140. There's lots out there.

Well put, a lot of people over state the recoil of these rifles. If you can handle an Enfield or something similiar, your fine.
 
I personally don't find the recoil that bad with my M44.

The metal butt plate is another matter. :D

Just use a folded rag draped over ones shooting shoulder if shooting in just a t-shirt.

Yeah I agree. My M44 and 91/30 did not have any more recoil than my No.4 Mk.2. I find people way over estimate the recoile of the Nagant, especially the carbines. They are louder than the 91/30's, but hardly kick more.
