Well I finally got it to the range yesterday. Very happy with it. The only thing I really am frustrated with is the NCstar scope, what a piece of crap there is some sort of fog right in the center of the crosshair (and yes I tried to clean the lenses). Bottom line is I need a new scope. Any ideas for and EER scope?

Groupings were about 3-4in at 100yards with a lot of that being the scope and my being new to high power rifles in general.

This is gonna be a real fun hunter.
 
Yea I just want something with a wider angle of view. I'm thinking either the weaver or burris in a fixed 4x or 6x.
 
I had made a scout out of a 1891/30, (nuthin special barrel action I picked up), that shot 2-3 moa with milsurp czech at 100 yards. I used a bushell red dot. The dot was bigger than the clays I shot (clay target laying on sand at 100 yd berm).
 
I'll prolly use the Ingman stuff in the near future. My buddy and I are gonna try out some hand loads with 150 and see how they work. I'm not sure what bullets to use though 308 or 303 ones. I guess I should just slug the barrel and see what I got. There are a lot more options with 308.
 
You'd be a bit closer to the bore's diameter with a .311" bullet, especially for an M-44. For Finn Mosin-Nagants with Finn barrels, you can find .3095" to .310" bores very often. Russians are more towards .312" and up.

So will 308 bullets work OK? Or should I just pick up some 303s? I'm totally new to reloading and my buddy has never had a mosin.
 
I bought 6 boxes of Norma 180 Grain softpoint Boat tail ammo at the gun show last weekend. It measures out at 0.308". I put this head to head with my reloads that are 0.311 ProHunters in my Hungarian M44 to try out my new Huber trigger and MoJo peep sights. I zeroed the sights for 100 yards first using the Norma ammo (10 shots and they were high and all over the place, felt it was as good as I was going to get, started to think the whole project was a failure as the accuracy wasn't any better, it was actually getting worse). I put two clean targets up side by side to have the head to head with my reloads. I shot a five shot group with the Normas first and then decided to shoot another 4 to see if the barrel heat would move the group or tighten it or what ever. I aimed dead center on the right target and was quite disappointed with the results. I then fired five of the reloads on the left target, I was impressed, three in the same hole, the right flyer was my pulling the last shot due to excitement. Gotta learn to relax more! :)

Trust me, you'll like the difference 0.03" makes!

My nagants get fed .311 and my enfields get .312


while .308 don't rattle down the bore they are a little undersized and your test shows the difference between .308 and .311.

so even though you have less choice in bullets using .311 you will find they are more accurate.
 
Upset

There's possibly another reason as to the good behavior of Sierra's ProHunters: they are flat-based spitzers and relatively soft from the bottom.
Yes, I think they upset just enough at firing to offer a better seal than the underbore boat-tailed Normas.
They do the same in my Enfields and my No.4 Mk.I shoots real good groups with them even with Federal Classic factory loadings.
Those same Normas could have shot great in my Tikka barreled M-91. Or not...
By any means, keep that brass, it is real good.

Update.

A friend of mine dud up some handloads for me, can't remimber the exact specs but what I do remimber are 150gr bullet in .311 diameter and the rest I'll post after I get ahold of the man.

Anyway the results were fantastic. At 50m a 3 shot grouping with bipod was less then 1" in my less then capable hands, shotty scope and brutal trigger. New trigger and scope allong with more practice will I'm sure make less then 1" groups at 100m should be no problem. This is gonna be a true dear slayer :dancingbanana: .

Oh and the recoil compaired to the hungarian 180is grain is sa-weet. I'm just lovin this rifle more and more.
 
I've got a Tasco 2-7x32mm EER waiting in the wings for my frankin-mosin. Right now, its mounted on my Ruger 22/45. Nice clear optics.
What kind of base did you use for yours?

I used Darrell Harrison's mount. Very very nice piece, much better then the b-square and simular mounts. It allows for both windage and elevation and when tightened down is solid. His site http://p077.ezboard.com/fparallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforumsfrm85

WHere did you get your scope? What is the eye relief? What was it worth? I need to get something better then this NCpoop one.
 
Hmm, that looks like the ticket. 9-26" sounds jut about right for this rifle and 2-6x is pretty good for hunting.
 
Well after changing the scope to a 2-6 power bushnell eer, bedding the action and releiving the stock around the barrel I was shooting 3/4 groups at 110 yards. I'm very happy with this rifle.

FWIW I'm not a great shooter so this rifle is compensating for me.
