Today I took some rifle to the range for some casual plinking. The shoot included a pair of rifles I have had for some time but never fired yet. (I have some rifles yet to be fired that have been in my lock up for over 30 years.)
Last year O bought one of those Polish M44 carbines. Nice shape, but the previous owner had removed the bayonet and mount. (If I had noticed this in the picture I would not have bought it.) Anyway, I only paid $275, so if it is a shooter, I am OK. For comparison, I took a 1955 Russian M44 I had shot once before. Ammo is copper washed silver tip. Russian, I think. All shooting was at 50 yards, so I could see the aiming mark. I used a 6 o’clock hold. The bayonet on the Russian was folded.
I shot both rifles and noticed the groups were good, but several inches low. The rear sight was set to the lowest setting, 100 yards. So I repeated the shoot, with the rear sight set to 300 yards. That put the groups close to the point of aim.
I really like these rifles. Built like a Russian tank, foolproof and pack 308-like power. I find the M44 more comfortable to shoot than the #5 Jungle carbine.
