m44 russian $195 at collector source

i got mine today its a 1945, the stock is pretty beat up and has some pitting on the outside of barrel under the handgaurd and the front sight is welded in place but all in all i think its ok for 200 bucks, the bore is shiny and had no powder residue in it only cosmoline. i'll probably use some stock filler and tru oil on it eventually so it doesnt feel so greasy to hold

Ordered Tuesday, arrived Thursday. A couple hours cleaning and I'm happy. Solid stock, a few scrapes but not many. A couple minor spots on the blueing, mostly below the wood, and a minor spot on the bolt, which came mostly off. Very good condition.

Thanks ST, SVT desporterizor and others with the reports. I wouldn't have ordered without your posts.

Ordered which Tuesday? I keep checking his site, tried ordering a couple of weeks ago and was told they were out of stock and now I only see the $495 rifles.

If you tried to order a couple weeks ago, and didnt check back in again since then, you missed more popping up. Theyve been taken down so they can catch up on orders - so I would assume more will pop up after orders have been filled.

Even if I f@ck it up, I didn't pay that much for it. I think it looks good so far, with the gross imperfections lessened... nothing ventured - nothing gained. Stock is solid as a rock, think this is going to be an awesome shooter, with character.

Bought a biodegradable Degreaser/Stripper and let it work on the finish (doing everything inside - had no odour). 3 or 4 treatments and a steel wool stripping pad finally got the job done. The buttstock was brutal, was black with that sh!t on it and needed more sessions (plus a few swear words). Sanded it down really nice and used a cloth to get all the dust off. Bought a small can of Minwax Polyshades (Stain & Poly in 1 step) in American Chestnut (satin finish) due to the price $9 and it had the least amount of warnings on the label. The smell wasn't as bad as Hoppes #9 but it was there and dissipated to a light smell afterwards. Put the ceiling fans on and it wasn't so bad. Slapped a coat on with a clean cloth and this is how it sits. I think this stuff needs a little while to cure, then I'll lightly sand and do another coat. How many coats, I have no clue.

I'm happy with the initial result and think it will look even better when I put more coats on. Again, not a clue what I'm doing but the result seems to be good so far. Most people use the linseed, tung, etc. I wanted to refinish for the cheapest amount possible and with the least hazard warnings - as I was doing everything inside.

What was the brand of degreaser and where did you get it? I've got one coming and I'll have to do my refinishing inside as well...

My new crapshoot toy got to the mail today...if it happens to be full of goop..does TSP work well to remove it ?...Cheers.

I used hot water only for the metal. I try not to put any type of chemicals on bluing if I don't have to. Metal work was a piece of cake, had to sweat out the cosmo from the stock with a hair dryer and paper towels. Time consuming, but it works well.

I use Simple Green HD and boiling water all the time. Comes out clean as a whistle and does nothing to the bluing.

What exactly is "mangled" about it? Stock repairs or deep gouges? Mine looked like the worst one, from the photos that were posted.

no repairs but some pretty decent dents and chunks missing near the rear of receiver, medium sized dents and gouges covering the rest of it and alot of writing on the stock in the form of small round indents, I'm sure it will look much better once I refinish it but this rifle would be a good candidate for a new stock. if yours was a 5/10 mine would be a 3.5 but it's okay because now I have no reason to baby it like the rest of my guns.
