m44 russian $195 at collector source

It is easy to shine up the bolt. Start with 320 or 400 sandpaper and then move up through 600 800 etc. Great lying on the couch work.

If your bolt does not match, you can remove the serial number with a medium/fine file before you start polishing. One of those strip sanders would work really well to remove the serial number.

Most of the "refurbished" MNs out there, including the pricey ones, have the original bolt serial number ground off and a new one stamped. Removing the mismatch isn't exactly the ultimate sin.

Sandpapers (400-2000) are used for auto body refinishing. They are available at Canadian Tire or any auto body store.

Bolt with a 21 in a triangle here as well,

Here's what I believe is lettering (or numbers) scratched in to the stock, it would be under the barrel between the two clips,

I noticed today as well since the stock has cleaned up a bit more than there appears to be more lettering scratched in to other parts of the stock that would be covered by the barrel / receiver. They're not clear enough to make out / take photos of yet though.

Also the end of the stock, under the butt plate is extremely dry, can someone suggest an oil to apply that wont change the colour? Thx.

My bolt looks like yours, with that 21 symbol and minor pitting on the finish. I don't have any lettering anywhere on my stock or metalwork except for a stamped "2" on the stock. Only spotted it when I sanded to bare wood, after getting that ugly black sh!t off.

The "21" seems to be associated with China, from what I'm reading. Can't seem to find anything concrete though. These could have been parts rifles reassembled with mismatching parts, Russian receiver & stock, w/Chinese bolt.

Sadly I am still waiting for the two i ordered. It seems like forever to get them. I ordered over the phone so no tracking number unfortunately. Didn't know they don't bother keeping the info. Other businesses I have dealt with do. Just sucks because they could be missing and lost or stolen and you can't do sweet diddly...

Ignore. I just got them today. Won't have a chance to look at them for a bit but man are they covered in cosmoline. "I love the smell of Cosmoline in the mornin!" :)

got mine today came pre covered in glitter....

Frosted Bore but good rifling :/
Barely any Cosmoline
Rusted and Pitted Bolt Handle
Rusted Barrel Bands (not pitted)
Not cracked Stock

Overall Very rusted but not pitted but the frosting in bore erks me I have yet no firearm in my possesion that has frosting in the Barrel guess time to dunk the Metal parts in my ATF/Oil Mixture bath and let sit for a few days. Already soaking the stock nope no stripper no proper Wood Finish just a gun oil it stains the wood a nice color and gives the stock a nice oily drip for first few outings and prevents it from cracking in extreme cold shooting

Great cleaning jobs my fellow M44 comrades.. so here's the updated picts of mine after de-cosmoing on the weekend.(see earlier posting about page 12?--very cosmoed rifle) It took about 4 hours. Lots of hot water and rags. I used a fine & superfine metal finishing pad from RONA to just take off the surface rust and bolt looks much cleaner. My bolt has the 21 in a triangle with two 6's and the letter 'A'. No other markings seen. Non matching receiver/bolt/magazine. Receiver matches butt plate (woohoo) (Mag number is 1383220 -will swap for 1 closer to my bolt- 1232250's). The left side of the stock is more 'blonde' than the right which is a kinda a reddish brown.. Unfortunately the natural light in the picts fades the colour. i haven't sanded the stock or re"oiled" it. I've left her "beauty marks" as is.. My ammo should arrive Thursday.. I can't wait to go out n try her at the range, uh the rifle that is. Damn all this new snow too..

Sorry to hear about the rust on your rifle, these seem to be hit/miss, never know what your gonna get till you open it up. Modern equivalent of enfields by the barrel... Clean the old girl up she still might be a good shooter.

shooting at 50 yards, turns out it is sighted with the bayonet extended as that shifted the POI above the POA. When I had it folded in, the shots would go to the left:

notice the tight group in the middle, shot after I went to change targets and extended the bayo (rifle had time to cool off)

more targets, rifle is warm at this point:

range vid time!

target on the right is from the video, on the left target I shot really fast only taking a second or less to aim:

got mine, and actually quite pleased. I have NEVER seen this much cosmoline on anything .....wow.....1945 nothing matches, metal is almost perfect (should be from all that cosmo), one very small rust spot on edge of magazine box (not worth mentioning). Bore is excellent with ton's of shine and rifling, crown looks good as well. Ripped it apart, cleaned everything and put it back together into an extra M44 stock I have had kicking around from a Boyd's swapout. Bolt works, it's not the cleanest but it's smooth and functional. I have left the stock covered in cosmo for the time being, but I have plans for it. Now to take this shooter out and try it out. Will be strictly a bang banger for corrosive ammo. I have a few others that I hand load for, this WON'T be one of them. Worth what I paid $250 or so to my door, no complaints.

I'm assuming most will use corrosive ammunition with their "shooter" M44? Any good deals right now?

The cleaning rod they sent me is in excellent condition and is blued.
