m44 russian $195 at collector source

Mine has what could be faint writing on my stock, a few interesting cartouches I have yet to try identifying and a chinese bolt. I admit I'm rather enamored with the idea these were used in some sort of conflict.

Pretty interesting stuff. Went to the range today, but couldn't bring my M44 as my ammo hasn't arrived yet. Anyone else take theirs to the range yet?

Shot 20 rnds out of it some of the frosting inside of the barrel is now gone....must of been some nice surface rust of some sort seems to shoot straight and gave her more cleanings so nice and bright and shiny inside....outside still ugly and rusty but meh good hike gun

Anyone know how to get a decent impression on paper of what these stamps are? I cant read them off the wood, and don't want to fill them with anything. Would a charcoal rubbing work?

Charcoal or graphite might work...I took a look at the early Chinese type 53 that I have and I have nothing to compare on her..The bolt is unmarked and looks rough...no serial number...

Do you have a camera with a Macro setting? A lens will pickup more than what the eye will... I stripped my stock before I noticed a "2" stamped into the buttstock.

Some people get official tool or just tap it over with a mallet, brass hammer or some just use a regular hammer be careful my friend bent his Front Sight Cover in his process :/

Anyone familiar with front sight adjustment with these puppies?

Give it a good shot of penetrating oil for a day or two , then tap it back and forth a bit to make sure its can move BEFORE you go to the range. There is no elevation adjustment, but as long as you use standard military ammo spec, there shouldn't need any adjustment, its not like a Mosin 91/30 that shoots high when the bayo is removed.

Isn't the front post adjustable with a tool, like the AK/SKS style irons?

EBAY search "m44 sight tool" from IPTOOLWORKS $25 US plus shipping. I have one for M30/91 - they work well although I had to modify the removal tool because the screw bent on a really tough one, Replaced it with M6X0.8

Has any one been able to locate an original or new Sling for the M44 here in Canada, several of the dealers here are out of stock and a few have the new Chinese Slings that the reviews state are crap.

This is one of two I got. This one is a 1945. There was some pitting along the magazine and receiver, but I cleaned it up and reblued. Looks not too bad. Bore looks in good condition and I cleaned up the trigger pull. It is sweet for a Mosin. The stock was dinged up pretty bad but no cracks or trench art. I sanded a little but kept some of the wear character to the stock and refinished it in a darker color. I like the look of it anyway.

Some pics of the reblued pitting:
