Was catching up on the last season of The Walking Dead on Netflix and it made me happy to see an old M44 being put to good use.

(warning: gooey)

I would rather rely on SKS, but both MN and SKS are poor man's choice. Here is the right tool for zombies. Compact, full auto, 20 or 32 round mags, bayo, old school Steyr quality. Can't beat that.

Or...you grab what is immediately available or found along the way because its a zombie apocalypse and it happened without warning.
Full auto if occupying a fortress, otherwise, way to noisy.
I'd be perfectly content roaming the woods/countryside with either a M44 or SKS.

I think the ideal zombie weapon would be one of those Pietta Puma (PPSH knock off) .22 rifles with a drum mag. Nice and lightweight, and relatively quiet, not to mention you could carry tons of ammo around for it.

Y'all aren't thinking big enough. If we're going to talk about the ultimate close-quarters anti- zombie artillery then allow me to present the greatest zombie-killing firearm ever conceived:

Carting around 100+ shotgun shells day in and out, no thanks.

M44 still for me. Long range & close range shooting, optimal carbine length. Reliability. Can be used as club. Silent, close quarters bayo to the head execution.

1897 Trench Gun. Capable of pump-firing (often misnamed as slam firing). Inspired zee Germans to lobby (unsuccessfully) to have Shotguns banned by the Geneva Convetion at the end of WWI.

Supplanted by the Ithaca 37 Trench gun before WWII. Also capable of pump-firing (pre-71 models), the Ithaca was much beloved by the Marines in the island hopping campaigns, was more mechanically robust than the 1897, and remained in service through the end of the Vietnam Conflict. Shotguns are, militarily, a specialist weapon, unsuitable for mass adoption as a general purpose arm. I'd take my M44 over any shotgun in the ZomPoc, all day, everyday, but even that wouldn't be my first choice.
