Hello All,

Finished new M48 purchase clean up, found cracked fore stock, somewhat disappointing.

Was hoping I could find some input on repair, the rest of the gun is immaculate.

Any suggestions

Thank you

Amazon or one of the better craft stores, get a Pin Point glue syringe. Sweat the cosmo out of the stock, glue and clamp. Don’t need to replace the stock, esp for a forend repair.

Unless it’s split right down into the receiver bits, then I would be looking for a refund!

I had the exact same thing happen to me just over a month ago. Great example of an M48A, just had a clean crack almost in the center of the top handguard, from the tip where you slide the barrel band over, then about 3" back. It wasn't split all the way back to the second barrel band.

In the end, all I did was try to get out some of the cosmo (did a poor job by my own standards), then took some carpenter's wood glue and applied it to the crack on the inside of the handguard. I just used a popsickle stick and very gently opened the crack to apply the glue, as I didn't have a Pin Point syringe, which would have been the bees knees! Once the glue was applied, I squeezed the wood together with one hand, then wiped away the little bit of excess glue that squished out with the other. After maybe 7 or 8 minutes of holding it together, I let go and inspected my work. Unless you were inspecting the rifle for flaws, you'd never see the crack!

One tip, when applying the glue, less is more!

I went one further repairing a m38 mosin in a m44 stock that had a crack to the side of the reciever. I stripped the worn stock and the crack was a good 3incher I drilled a small hole at the point of the crack and inserted a brass pin (dollerama) glued it all up bound it. Buffed down the end of the pin. Oiled up the stock and now I have a very nice shooting M38. I am amazed how well my home repair worked. It is not perfect you can still see a line and the obvious pin but it's better off than it was before as a shooter.

Any competent gunsmith can fix that. Probably run you $40. I have had two stocks repaired so far over the years. Both had broken wrist. First one was savage 311 side by side shotgun. Previous owner was in the habit of flipping it shut. Second was a Husqvarna rifle with the usual split at the wrist. But this one was right through and I thought the stock was garbage. Anyway. That's what it cost me. $40 and it's back in business and properly bedded.
