I was planning on mounting a holosight, but not sure I want to do that anymore, so I'm scouting out other options. Looked at the Marstar stuff..it's either ugly or too high in magnification or both. Budget is a concern...any suggestions?

I've put a carry handle sight on my M4 upper. I'm not planing on shooting long range with it so back to basics for it ;) If I was to scope it I think I'd put a Leupold MR/T 1.5-5x20mm on it.

(ducks) Gently used Gen. 4 Elcan?
Elcans seem to be quite pricey, and also very heavy. As well, I haven't heard anything good about rigidity. However, external adjustments I do find appealing...

While the mounts are questionable from a military field use perspective, the optics are excellent, even in low light. If the tritium aiming post works, all the better. If you use this on a range-use rifle only, a gen. 4 base should last you fine. The benefit to the base is that it is set up already for an AR, giving you proper cheek weld right out of the box with no screwing around with risers, high or extra high rings. The range dial works with most military surplus ammo, and if you're into handloading, you can do the 'open gate' method (shouldn't be a problem with 200m shooting, but hey). Although I'm gentle with mine due to the mount issues, I believe they will take a beating better than most, if not all civilian optics.
Pricing should be in the $600 mark for something in good, used shape. When you factor all of the above, these are good scopes for the money.
