M600 "Maggie" Killed this bear Tuesday

Not much of a bear - pretty small. I shot it this week.

The M600 in 350RemMag did well as usual. I hit him straight thru the lungs and heart from my treestand - 35cal entrance hole and about a 1 1/2" exit. I was using 250Speer HCs at about 2440MV. Bear ran about 8 to 10yards I'd say.

That's my son in the pic. He's hunting with me and helped me field dress and drag it out - and skinned it for me and took it to the butcher too (thanks son). He's hunting my new Ruger Frontier in 358 which he has in the pic. I put an old canoe paddle stock on it for all the messing around with sticky bait pails etc. - saves the nice grey laminate one. It shoots accurately too with the canoe paddle handle. Hopefully the Fronter will work well for my son to tag a bear too - a BIGGER one please.

Finally a good pic of the Frontier,I will be phoneing around on monday for 1 in 338 Federal.Was trying to find out if the ruger had the slots over the reciever to move the scope back & OFF the barrel.

Yep - is good. Had it out last week in a ground blind a few evenings. But this particular treestand was very cramped. So i figured short little gun. Since my son wouldn't give me back my frontier 358, I grabbed my M600 maggie. In my world a 35cal 250gr at any where around 2400MV always works on bears. Still, I hope to take another bear soon (?) with the 350WSM with an extra 300fps - hopefully one big enough for at least two pairs of mittens this time.

My buddy, Bert, would tell you that the 250 Speer at 2200 fps works on everything he hunts. Moose, bear, caribou, sheep, wolf.............Great bullet!

I've not met him of course but I'm a follower of Bert's sage opinion on this point - based on your various posts thru the years explaining his settled view. My new 358 with a 16" barrel is putting a 250SpeerHC out the door at about 2150MV right now with some initial loads. I've just begun load development. But I'm keeping Bert's 358's stellar performance in mind as I attempt to sneak it up to the 2200MV level and perhaps a little beyond. Knowing Bert's experience is useful as I certainly won't feel undergunned here in Ontario. Thank you for passing his thoughts on hunting along to others.
